Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Gain IT skills and move out of Oil an Gas business

For all the reservoir engineers and petroleum engineers I have a very important suggestion. Don't worry if you got laid off.

Oil is going to die like Coal. Move out of these companies before it's too late. Learn some computer programming and get better paying job. You will be in much better situation.

Why can't people accept that careers in corporate America just plain s---... and in bed with government... it's just plain 'ole fascism... one can't work without the other...

The environment is the same no matter where you go... the lie-yers, MBA's, Wall St., banksters, and the politicians are just F'ing up the Western world... they've already stolen yours, your children's, and grand-children's future...

IT work takes years of experience to get really good at. it used to be a very good paying highly sought after skill based role. But today there are so many IT folks constantly tossed in all sectors and outsourced to 3rd party support contracts it drives the wages down and dumbs down the expectations of what should be the job role.

Take a look at job boards. They always want a user support/security/ vm admin/ server admin/ network engineer as if this is standard for a single person to do on a daily basis. Most hiring firms cannot believe that every one of those tasks is a very specific knowledge base which takes years to master and impossible for 1 person to do it all

Then they complain about the crappy support they have and outsource it.

But we hired the kid from the electronics department at Walmart, what do you mean he lit the data centre on fire? Doesn't he know what he is doing?

And compete with the masses of information technology staff laid off by the oil and gas industry. The job is acquired based not on the education but on the experience. ITT is one example of an education institution reaping the rewards of the noted mentality.
