iPhone 7 Processor - A10

Now, this is hefty change... A10 is forty percent faster than A9 of iPhone 6s and double the speed of the A8 processors. A10 also has a ramped up graphics performance which is also 40 percent more powerful than the A9 - say whatever you want, but I see this as a hefty improvement.

@infl -- Do you have good understanding of process? Reality is that you don't have any clue. TSMC 10 is better than Intel 14. Intel went with dual patterning (cost saving) for lower metal layers for 14 and paid price. Broadwell A0 silicon came in lab in Jan and was able to boot Windows in August. It took intel multiple steppings and 7-8 months to just boot silicon. TSMC customers have already 10 nm silicon in lab and initial yield is much better than Intel.

Let's assume that Intel process is better then why engineers at Intel are not able to get performance > 15% from one generation of cpu core to another?

@JgUadQd-1nfl where is Intel's tick Tock it worked like magic back in the past but now recently few years has started to slip and slip and slip and slip and slip! Why is there a Kaby and Coffee in the cards if 10nm is so great? Shouldn't Intel want to scale and move to that super dense and small 10 for die and power and performance and cost improvement????

As far as Nvidia, Apple, and others care is that from 28 to 20 to 16 and 10 at TSMC they got PPAC improvement and it sure looks like it with the A10. Looking at benchmarks the A11 12 and 13 should come right on time. Where is Intel's tick Tock? It has become tick Tock doe and dumb four chips on a nose should get a lot of people in TMG and LTD fired!!!

@1nfl - it doesn't matter that TSMC's "10 nm process" is less advanced that Intel's "14 nm process". Sure, it's a marketing ploy - one that happens to work. "Process nodes" were long ago divorced from any minimum feature size on the chip - they are all "marketing nodes" now. Transistor density should double between nodes, but there is no policeman for that; one may also shrink different transistor applications differently - say, the random logic gets 2X density, but the cache only gets 1.5X density. A lot of free variables to play with.

Again, it doesn't matter. It's marketing. It works. Other company's mobile chips have also been kicking Intel's a-- for 15 years even though they were on n-1 nodes.

Recall these other marketing actions?

AMD gets wind that Intel is going to announce a 1 GHz Pentium 3 on Monday. So AMD does an announcement on Sunday. Result: "Intel lost the race to 1 GHz." (Truth: Intel won the race to 1 GHz).

IBM announces it is using copper interconnects. Intel's current process at the time still used aluminum. Result: "Intel is behind IBM in technology." (Truth: copper had already been developed for the next process, it just hadn't ramped yet).

Intel did beat everyone to High-K dielectric gates and FinFETs (err... sorry, "3D tri-gate transistor"). No one seemed to care, though.

TSMC and Samsung customers have 10nm silicon today for q1 2017 products (phones for android and iPad for Apple)

Apple outperforms the top bin core-M processor today on the "inferior" TSMC 16nm process.

Wait until anandtech runs the full gamut of benchmarks including SPEC. Then it will become painfully obvious that Intel is getting its a$$ kicked even with two handicaps - an inferior process and a severely constrained thermal envelope (a phone).

Think ahead about what this means for the future server competitors. Do you think engineering know how is exclusive to Intel? OR do top engineers flock to where the money is? Look at the flow of Intel PEs and fellows to Apple and other competitors. Connect the dots.

These threads crack me up. Are there really people stupid enough to believe TSMC is even close to an actual 10nm process? How gullible must one be to believe such a thing?

The only people who buy it and breathlessly carp about it appear to be mouthbreathing bitter ex-employees or AMD/Apple fans.

TSMC's "10nm" process is less advanced than Intel's (actual, no double quotes) 14nm process. Go do some basic research. It's all so silly.

TSMC is going to hit Intel like a freight train.

10nm client processors in 2017 with Apple leading the way.

7nm server processors in 2018.

By the way AMD has even signed up.

Everyone is riding the coattails of Apple investments in TSMC and Samsung. Intel is left with declining volumes, underutilized fabs and loss of scale and technology leadership.

And to think the A10 is done still on TSMC 16nm, and that 10nm is coming next year for the iPhone8.

So looks like Apple with each process node is getting die scaling and adding billions of transistors, enabling new unique multi-core and architecture enhancements that get REAL performance improvement.

Looks like Tick Tock Tick Tock has moved from Intel to the tag team of TSMC and Apple.

There is no reason that Apple can't now scale up the cores and instead of buying deeply discounted x86 from intel design their own, but on the other hand why waste valuable people, TSMC capacity, it isn't like if they get 10-20% more improvement they will get more than a few percentage MS. The PC business is largerly cast with macro economic factors and pull. The iPhone pulled people and I don't think there is much more. Better to get BK to bend over and screw intel for great pricing and the best dies and use the valuable resources in other place.

BTW i have talked to TIm and he agrees continue to screw intel the best way, buy their best at deeply discounted prices; x86 and modems, and laugh all the way to the bank. LOL

Intel is almost certainly getting kicked out of the Mac. Now that the CPU is better and the GPU is MUCH better, it's a no brainier to get rid of the Intel tax and control your own destiny.
