Even if Shakopee does not close, it is Irrelevant, either way there will be alot of layoffs coming soon. And this is coming from the CEO, not some random employee who stated this. The company is restructuring, and for good reason. HDDs are not as relevant as they used to be at one point. And they are not future bound lets say 5-10 years from now, no matter what anyone tells you, period end of discussion. The 6500 will effect every HDD department world wide not just Asia, this is a fact not some rumor. The rumors are just about the date between now and the need of FY 2017. But it will happen before FY2017. I love to see employees who are c---y and acting like they are indispensable. The fact is that anyone except for the execs are replaceable anywhere, at any company, under any circumstance. Even the execs can be replaced. So when the CEO tells everyone that Seagate will layoff 6500 because of HDD being less relevant, that means you should definitely ask questions and doing something. Looking at possible alternatives in case of anything is always good. This means, stay with Seagate and look at the SSD department, or look for opportunities at another company which is future bound. Obviously if someone is on this site and posting comments that means they are thinking about the facts that they might be replaced or let go, no matter what their comment states. But most managers will just say go back to work and just ignore all things until somethings happens, and then you are on your own. Shrewsbury MA site same thing happen, top manager left right before site closed. That shows alot. Same thing happened at Shakopee site. Top Director left for Samsung SSD and 4 months earlier he was stating how great HDDs are and that HDDs are future bound. The hypocrisy in this case definitely shows.

EWF (Earth, Wind, & Fire) said the date would be "...the 21st night of September". Good enough for me.

Indeed, it usually is a Wednesday- think June 29th, for instance. I think there's a reason and deeper meaning to the Wednesday choice. We all know Wed is hump day, because it's in the middle of the week. Perhaps top management believes that employees will be getting laid on Weds (hump days) and thus not care too much if they are laid off. Trading one lay for another, as it were. Good thing I have an engineering degree. It enabled me to reach this conclusion.

Only LCO is relatively safe since it is developing 3.5 inch cloud drives. Some Minnesota guys must be regretting for doing 2.5 inch HDDs development or even worse, hopeless HAMR.

It really does not matter which Wednesday. If you are worried just look for a job at a different location or company. If layoffs do not happen this Wednesday it will happen soon. Demand for HDD's and PCs are declining which is exactly what Steve Luczo mentioned. If the CEO stated that Seagate will layoff 6500 by the end of FY 2017 because demand for PCs and HDD's that is definitely a sign it is time to jump ship to another department or company. Future HDD will no longer be made in 2.5 inch form factor, and much of the Mission critical space is being eaten up by SSDs. Plus many Seagate employees are leaving Left and Right for Samsung, Amazon, .... etc. As well most of the 6500 employees are still around right now. All HDD depertments will be effected in some way in terms of the head count. That is guaranteed, even if Shakopee location does not close down.

This is getting lamed. Dates, numbers, locations, and groups don't matter. Stock price is high relatively and that's good.

People quit when get offers. Business as usual for those stuck. God bless those life got or will get affected.
