Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

iPhone 7 Geekbench 4 score destroys Skylake

Looks like Intel's flagship CPU can't compete with ARM.

This is a PHONE folks. If Apple decided to put this in a laptop it would kick Skylake / Kaby Lake butt. All on TSMC by the way.

You still think layoffs are done?

Wait until the ARMy really lays into servers.

TSMC and Samsung will pass Intel in process technology next year and then the performance gap will widen further.

This company is fckued!

When will you guys understand this is not apples-to-apples comparison.

There are many factors OTHER than the CPU that determine these scores. The OS, for example, is a big part of it.

Apple has a big advantage in their design methodology since they create both the CPU and the OS. This kind of a tight integration makes a HUGE difference.

If you check out m7-675y results, they highly depend on the system in which it is implemented.

Here are a few examples:

https://browser.primatelabs.com/v4/cpu/321760 (MacBook with Windows 10)

https://browser.primatelabs.com/v4/cpu/807045 (Macbook with macOS 10.12)

https://browser.primatelabs.com/v4/cpu/739777 (Lenovo X1).

In all these examples the m7 is > 10% faster than the A10 in the iphone and almost 20% faster than the same CPU and same computer actually with OS X 10.11 (single core performance).

So please go and learn...

Classic Intel.

They are not even aware that they have a huge problem with Apple CPU performance.

@JfRsDE9-2mju Is that PTD talking there ? 10nm may be closer to Intel 14 but it is ramping and they expect 7nm soon. Each generation is going to give die and power / performance scaling improvement while Intel limps alone on 14 and 14+ with Kaby and Coffee. I guess that is okay as die get bigger yield demand will be lower so Intel can provide enough die.

Intel tick Tock failed and now Apple and TSMC are catching up. If you read the latest forecast TSMC and Samsung will be matched to Intel and next year beat Intel. Better get off layoff and get to work!

A big issue for Intel over the next two years will be cost as it must drop with huge 10nm ramp and keeping 14 online will bust cost, more ACTs to follow, LOL

Was Intel ever in the mobile arena?

Maybe there was a safaricom phone in Africa once upon a time. Can't seem to recall any Intel phones. Maybe it was all a dream...

Oh no. Wait. There seems to be 10 billion dollars missing from our bank accounts. I wonder how that happened?

Intel arrogance and denial LOL!

Keep thinking that.

Your competitors love it when they are underestimated.

There is an awful lot of Derp in here. Angry, bitter Derp.

First, if you think TSMC has an actual 10nm process anywhere near ready you are a retard.

Second, if you think ARM is a threat to Intel in the server space, you are a retard.

Third, those benchmarks are idiotic and unclear. That said - Intel's competition in the mobile arena is obviously ahead.

A11 will be delivered to Apple in Q4'16/Q1'17 by TSMC in 10nm process.

Intel is about to get fcked in spectacular fashion.

@1fiv

Also... What is the TDP of the 2.6GHz Skylake chip?

Hint - it's not 4.5W

Phones need 3W.

Learn about thermals and form factors genius.

Apple is beating Intel with only a 3W TDP!

Give it a roomy 15W (like in a MacBook Air) and it will be even more embarrassing for Intel.

@1owr

With much more thermal headroom I wouldn't be surprised to see A10X clocked at 3GHz.

This is total humiliation for Intel.

@1out

You work for Intel?

No wonder we're in trouble.

Hey genius - the original comparison is to the TOP BIN Core-m which is 4.5W TDP and turbos to 3.1GHz

4.5W TDP is fanless - i.e. For tablets

Phones will have less TDP which means the A10 could clock HIGHER and perform better with higher TDP form factors like a laptop.

Intel is getting spanked hard here.

The MacBook CPU: m7-6Y75 is 1.2 GHz - turbo 3.1 GHz <= which turns on during benchmark.

The TDP for SKL is 3.5-7W for A10 I expect 3W max (limited by heat disipation of a form factor).

Lets wait for A10X and tablet form factor which can be compared with MacBook.

The benchmark result link @coo's comment for Skylake is for a 1.2 GHz clock (vs. 2.4 GHz for the A10).

A little searching on the site and I found this 2 core Skylake system at 2.6 GHz:

https://browser.primatelabs.com/v4/cpu/146939

With this comparison, they appear about equal.

One has to be careful with benchmarks and where each process and product were designed to operate, but is there any wonder why Intel products have failed in mobile and tablets.

The process technologist claim the recent process are great in density and the FINFET scale great for low voltage and low power, yet on the third attempt to do a low power product the whole line got canceled. Really three generations of trying to do optimized process and design and the product fails to be competitive with inferior process nodes being manufactured by smaller design teams.

Now that ARM and the softbank is funding lots of people and designs on 10nm for servers, I'd say Intel is more than in trouble.

They are trying to compete in commodity business where the outcome is going to be losses

They are trying to compete in high volume low margin where the outcome is going to be losses

The competition is coming for the high margin low volume server business, means dropping margins.

Net will be more structural changes, wholesale cost cutting, and more layoffs offcourse, but just like the response to ARM, it'll be too little to late, LOL

Tens of thousands of Intel people can't compete with 1000 people working on Apple chips. Shows how much DEAD WEIGHT there is at Intel.

LOL @mst

Check the links in the previous post.

It isn't even close on integer code.

Face it - Apple's newest CPU is kicking Intel's butt on a supposedly 'inferior' TSMC process node.

In a phone no less.

Wait until the iPad which allows for higher frequencies due to better thermal conditions.

Intel is done.
