Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Laptop and PC sales using Costco as the metrology

Remember the old days when you couldn't wait to go to Costco to see what new hardware was released and had to pay a few thousand to get a decent computer? Plus fighting the crowds?

Now go to the same store and see maybe 1 or 2 people looking at x86 with 10x the people looking at phones and tablets... Gives you a sense how far wintel has fallen. Just my two cents.

I see a lot of land whales grazing on samples at Costco. No interest in PCs.

Apple iPhone-8 will surpass Intel-Core performance.

Bank it.

As Apple+TSMC blows past Intel Core performance, what's to stop them and the other ARMy players from building their own PCs? They iterate on products much faster than Intel and TSMC/Samsung will pass Intel in process technology as early as next year.

Intel's days are numbered.

Good thread. My MBP is 4 years old and I really think it has at least 4 more to go, very snappy - I change my phone on a 2 year cycle - I need both though

You're being too generous.

That billion installed base will also shrink as the ARMy builds content creation machines as well. Why stop at phones?

The very definition of PC will change from wintel to AppleARMs and ARMdroid.

Coscto and BB are good judges based on traffic and such.

The difference is laptops are used for content for the most part, a must for work, but at home the phone is more a necessity, you can do almost everything but serious content creation on it.

Net sum: You need maybe one or two laptops at home and you replace them when they break, even don't care much about harddrive with free cloud storage at places like google etc. Phones are getting good enough but you will for the most have one for every man, woman and child in the richer countiies

PC about a billion floating around with 5 year life cycle = 200 million sales OUCH OUCH OUCH

Smart Phones closing in on ~ 25% penetration of 7 billion people = 2 billion installed with 3 year life time and the rest of the world everyone wants a smartphone and dont' need no laptop.

x86 sales 200 million and about flat

ARM sales more than a billion and growing, slowing but a BILLION guess who as economy of scale, can afford huge factories and deep pocket R&D, ain't Intel, took Intel way too long to realize due to arrogance. The 10nm embracement of ARM and LG is too late as TSMC and Samsung and the other foundries will be doing billions of ARMy CPUs as Intel just gets started doing 200 millino x86 and maybe 50 ARM for LG.

Time for a huge restructure of the company!

Has the laptop to tablets as like the flip phone turned to smartphones?

I think all electronics are getting sparse traffic these days at costco. Even the direct tv promo dudes have gotten as agrssive as the hawkers at batu ferrengie night market. More people are by the trager stand, the seaflood stand, watching the juice grinding dude with the headset, and of course waiting in line for a buck and a half hotdog and coke. Even Intel people dont bother to browse the computers.

Maybe we should have a buy a computer and get free bananas for a year promo with costco?
