Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

new position out of intel

I am working under VPG in FM for almost 5 years with grade 6..my base is almost 100k, i got another offer in bay area for almost 160k base salary and more bonus than intel. my manager negotiate with HR which accept to increase my salay to 125k and my manager promised me with a promotion next year and another salary increase. till now confused to accept the counter offer or move to bay area as it is more expensive.

Don't believe what your boss "promises". He'll say whatever he wants to keep around.

Another downside of staying is that you might be less marketable to other companies later on. Are you learning new skills? Growing as an engineer? If not, move on

If you are a grade 6 with 125K, you will be screwed the next review if you don't get a promotion, because you are already hitting the ceiling of your grade, you won't get a raise for awhile. And your manager promises a promotion, really??? What makes him keep his word? And what if there is a re-org, you won't be with him or if he changes his job. Too many chances for you to get screwed.

Strap a rocket on your back, light the fuse, and get out!

It's a no-brainier. Don't over think it. Run.

Wall Street couldn't be wrong???

LMAO!

I bet Wall Street was right when Nasdaq hit 5000 in the year 2000?

Intel had a 500 billion market cap then.

Look - every company has a life cycle. No one makes money forever. It's the nature of capitalism. It's actually healthy to have new ideas replace old ones.

Guess who's getting replaced in our industry?

I have a friend who got hired within VPG as an RCG grade 5 for 98k base salary.so how intel is still paying old employees with lower salaries in FM as the area is a high cost. as i can see grade 6 are still around 100k in folsom. HR is a big gamer when it comes to leaving. why HR don't increase employees salaries before they leave. they are sh...t.

Anything below grade 9 at Intel is a waste of your valuable time.

This is a sinking ship.

Peak PC was in 2011 and you see how unsuccessful they have been in diversifying out of x86.

Just leave for higher growth companies. There are plenty out there in the world.

If Intel is not growing or if they are shrinking, your opportunities for advancement become VERY limited.

Think about your long term career.

I advise all RCGs and mid-career folks to steer clear of this dinosaur.

Intel has not been able to adapt.

More pain is coming.

An organization that lets you be stuck at grade 6 for five years is not worth your time f---ing leave !

Don't depend on promo down the road - that may or may not happen as others have said. Your manager could move to another group, you could get re-deployed, you get pushed out on the promo for some stupid reason by upper mgmt... Have had it happen to me for no reason what so ever ("oh joe deserved it more" - yeah bullshit, joe is s--- up...).

The comments on pay range are important to look at. In the higher quartile of a pay grade - you are under the radar at focal time. If you are not high performer, you may get no raise, satisfactory and SSL4 since you are not trending well. My managers were always good about keeping me just below midpoint.

The Bay Area living costs are atrocious--but there are way more opportunities there, should something happen at your new job, than if you stay stuck in Folsom.

intel is a sinking ship and like other poster said, don't rely on promises which can be broken later.. no guarantees.. being higher on pay scale for your grade also makes you more likely to get chopped down the road...

time for change, doing real work that will result in quality products you can be proud of, not missed targets and projects ending up in the trashcan like at Intel.

consider the other job.

Consider only what is certain. Promises of future raises and promotions are NOT certain. Your manager cannot guarantee that they will be able to deliver on anything at next focal.

And $125 is definitely at the upper end of grade 6 pay scale. It is likely near if not above the midpoint of grade 7 pays calendar. This will have long term impact on the size of future raises. A successful EE at the upper end of the pays calendar at grade level will receive a smaller raise than an EE with comparable performance but who is near the midpoint of pay at grade.

Depends what you want to get out of your job and your life. Is this new fork in the road moving you closer to your ideal life(including career)? This is the big picture. Then the practicalites you need to compute the take home vs delta in cost of living. How easy is it for you to move. Then the tactical consideration, if a promotion does not materialize what are your options. Then the gut feeling. Do you feel like trying something new or are you comfortable where you are building skills, earning a bit more each year. If you're young and single I say go for it. You can always move back to FM.
