Cummins like many big corporations likes to boast how wonderful they are in giving to the United Way. But I believe that they are helping to create a need for the United Way in the first place by destroying the lives of their own employees with massive layoffs every few years.

I agree. I had 10 years in at Cummins, considered high potential, always outstanding performance review, overall great employee and I was let go during the layoff in Fall of 2014. No respect for loyal, dedicated, competent employees once they reach the 10 year mark and/or high salary.
In the military they give medals to those who sacrifice themselves so others may gain. At Cummins they give bonuses to those willing to sacrifice the careers of others so that they may gain.
Cummins deliberately over-hires when time are good so it can let people go and get a bump in the share price when it wants to.
