My advice, take what you can get from Aetna and then go work for their competitors. They paid for your training, so say thanks on the way out the door and when they try to hire you back next year, hit them for a 30% salary increase.

I think the cutting back WAH due to collaboration is an excuse. Personally I would not be surprised at all if there is a merger coming. I think they are trying to centralize the work force since many work from home. UHC wanted to buy Aetna several years ago. IMO there is more to this than is being communicated. So much for transperancy. Our department has had seven managers in 5 years, each more clueless than the last. Honestly I have no idea where they get these people. How do you hire an Appeals Manager that has no appeals experience??? That is the source of the collaboration and innovation problems -- incompetent management. It's hard to innovate and collaborate if you have zero idea of what your staff or department even does.

Just got waxed by Aetna! Spent the summer (11) weeks teaching a group of 18 Humana case managers Aetna software and the wheel of integrity. Entire departments have been offshored to phillipines leaving 37 employees in one office. Taking the ERP and starting over at age 62. There is no communication at Aetna: like 1984. You know only enough to do your assigned tasks. Albeit painful in the interim future I'll be happier

Agree with the above comment completely. Left last month ( I'm just under the age + Years cutoff for early retirement so it's no good for me anyway), but am much happier now. I was a Telecommuter literally 45 miles from the local office, so I was going in 2 days a week, recently changed to three....My Feeling is the loss of telework has a lot more to do with getting people to quit rather than saying their being laid off. And while I'm Complaining: When Aetna raised their Minimum wage, I missed any pay raise, and am paying on Student loans that are over three years old: It's always nice when a company cuts Longterm, valuable employees out of any benefits.

Left a month ago, I would have been a prime candidate for early retirement and would have grabbed it. But no regrets because

1) got good job (at Aetna competitor) which recognizes my experience is valuable, which isn't easy at this age. (A year of looking for a lateral transfer within Aetna came up empty). If I hadn't snagged this job don't know when another would come around.

2) I was slowly going mad from Aetna's culture of hierarchical authoritarianism. They're cutting back on work at home to enhance communication they say? The problem with their communication is that all information flows downhill on a strictly need to know basis, and no information is allowed to trickle upwards. Anybody at the working level would have (and often tried) to tell them subcontracting their pharmacy management to Caremark would be disastrous, for example. Of course, this is why they don't put any value on an employee's experience. Whole levels of management exist just to filter out any information which might counter management's sweet dreams.

3) last voluntary early retirement was pretty paltry, especially in the area of healthcare. We'll see if this one will be, but if the stick in the other hand is layoffs, as with last time, they don't need much carrot, and if the purpose is to cut future expenses generous healthcare coverage is counterproductive.

So, too bad they didn't offer it a couple of months ago, but mainly shrug.
