Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Did anyone hear that SHLD just outsourced most of their IT Department to TaTa this past week?

I would love to know if the IT hardware is still from 1992, token ring at 16MB sec, no wonder why the systems are crashing, the hardware is past EOL.

OMFG, token ring from 1992 that stuff hardware wise is atleast 24/25 years old.

Even Kmart pre bankruptcy was running token ring but that was only till 2001/2002 before they upgraded all of the IBM 4683,NCR,Fujitsu, ect POS hardware to one unified system that was Ethernet.

The registers at Kmart now are Ethernet, but you can see from the jacks under the register at Kmart they were token ring at one time.

Also, when my store closed the token ring cables were still in the ceiling.

The token ring cables were left in place when the new Ethernet cable was ran. It followed the same exact track.

Just something for you guys to think about, the token ring IBM 4683 registers Kmart ran till 2001/2002. Before the IBM SurePOS 700-xxx. Were much more reliable hardware and software wise than the current system.

FYI: I only worked at a Kmart store so I know the hardware the stores ran.

I wonder if Lampert bought Kmart in 2001/2002 pre bankruptcy he would cancel the IBM SurePOS rollout? Keep the stores that were upgraded on that system but, keep running the multitude of POS systems Kmart had at the time? Example the IBM 4683

When I left a few years ago, SHC had a bad history of only funding projects that create new functionality, without ever performing technology refreshes to existing applications or functions. As a result, much of the hardware and software (while current when installed) reaches so many versions behind and such age, that it goes out of support. The parts are no longer available, implementation knowledge was long gone, and finding outside service providers is difficult or cost prohibitive.

I haven't set foot in that crap-site in years, but I can't believe policies have changed.

Does anyone know if they are still running 16M Token Ring (circa 1992) in the majority of the buildings? Any other insights into hardware/software from someone still onsite? I would love to know.

"it was not 'most' of I.T. ... it was approx 300 data center and some related associates at Hoffman Estates. It was to an off shore company . I would guess in total was less than 1/4 of total I.T. I know that there are some folks in I.T. who left the company or retired and we have not filled those open recs. I can only assume that more cuts are coming but that is just my own opinion."

Thanks for the clarification. I read that on 2 different message boards on the internet, and was asking to see if anyone knew if it was true or not. I should have specified in my original post that I wasn't 100% certain that it was true (ie. about most of the IT Department being outsourced).

Do you work in the IT department of SHC? Here is my question, is the back office hardware and software in as bad or worse condition than the IT equipment at store level?

Is the back office hardware on its last legs? Is it considered past EOL?

Wasn't it an actual SHLD subsidiary that is in India running help desk, accounts payable, online commerce, etc.?? If Tata has been contracted I'm sure they only have one piece and not everything.

I did not hear that but I am not supprised. I thought that is why SHC went to India where labor is VERY CHEAP.

I am supprised they outsourced it to TaTa, maybe they can run it cheaper than SHC can?
