Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

OP here. As I mentioned in my posting, everyone knows I am leaving, including my manager. It's a standing joke at staff meetings. Now he may not know the exact date but he was told next Spring. Now in all the reorg and ACT stuff he is a new manager to me (old manager was ISPed) but still has to be clueless not to realize. OTOH it is very possible that I will be targeted and this was his way of saying, "I told you you were on the edge."

Bottom line is it would benefit me to make it until next March, but if it's only the 1st of the year that's OK as well. And if it's September 1, I will manage as well.

I do like the suggestion that I take some online Intel courses and use that to pretend I am still developing new skills.

Announce that you are retiring. The last person in my group who retired voluntarily (about 2 years ago) announced his intention about a year ahead. This took the pressure off him to develop and also got him relieved of a lot meetings and planning sessions. He also took all his vacation and a sabbatical before formally exiting.

Working to age 70 sounds like a freaking NIGHTMARE rather than something to fantasize about. My long term plan was to retire early around age 58 or 59. An ERP package was very timely shortly after I turned 58 so I'm now retired as per the plan. :) No way in H3LL would I work till I'm 70 yrs old!!!! shivers at the mere thought of it

Intel will rarely let you work past your retirement date unless you are indispensable or still making strong advancement moves. Intel has never liked 'staying still' so if you don't play the game and do something that looks like 'development', you will surely get the next VSP or at focal the SSL4 so you can become the next ISP. Intel is not really a place to settle in for a nice, secure path to retirement, like to age 70 which many of us fantasize we can do. Don't assume you will be allowed to work all the way to your personally preferred retirement date. I'd love to know how many ordinary folks at Intel (not MCM or BoD) are 65+. And even if there were some, I'll bet they are virtually gone after ACT and ERP. The next round of ISPs will sweep up the stragglers.

Also, who's to say the next round of layoffs is under 6 months away? Maybe he knows something about your division?

Simple - do a couple of online courses and show the completion certificates to your boss. Done and done.

The next conversation with him: "I exceeded what you asked me to do, correct?"

is your retirement eligibility before focal closes? It seems like you might make it regardless of manager BS. Another idea is to formally make a statement about your retirement date. Would they dare eff with you after that?

I'd be a little worried about that convo if it was me. Sounds like they are setting you up and then you fail, right before being retirement eligible.
