Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

A tech worker shortage? Really?

Not sure if there really is a tech worker or STEM shortage. From the number of H1Bs, you'd think there are no Americans looking for tech jobs but apparently that is not the case, at least in Silicon Valley. http://www.cnbc.com/2016/07/19/silicon-valley-much-young-talent-many-fewer-jobs.html

Oh yeah? So how and where does this show? Democracy, freedom, civil rights, philosophy, arts, science, etc., etc., are things that "white" boys created, a-hole....Get over it moron, the talk is not about race, if you want to make it about race you don't have much to show.......

Most of the jobs at Intel didn't require someone book smart. Just someone that can think. Many of the H1B folks lack this talent just like most of the white folks.

#bma you are right, I would say only 20% of Engineers have the drive interest to be in the field i.e. master black belts the rest of ppl should move on.

A good engineer i.e can build and run team of 8 to -15 Jr Journeyman Engineers. The black belt can train these youngster and is gold. Everyone moves into admin, or leaves thru layoffs. I bet you and ten ppl with 0 to 4 yrs experience 99% of other teams, you could care less if h1 or not. That's the econimics team bynamics is key

H-1B system is a scam started during another scam called "y2K crisis" which brought 1000s of Indians here many with very low qualifications too. There is no STEM crisis here at all. Most American born STEm workers are now working in other fields because it has been abused. Unfortunately, the establishment figures like Clinton support it because theya re funded by the rich whoc are two hoots for American middle class.

@txx it's actually not a racial thing. HowHow can someone in a h1b start a business and run it? They need to be employed 8 years to get gc. It's the erosion of the very thing people from India come to the US for, I.e. A good paying secure job with some basic human dignity and work life balance. Without this it's a race to the bottom.

There is no shortage of engineers in the USA.

There is a shortage of engineers willing to work 12 hour days at starting salaries(I call this lower pay)

The large companies like to hire right out of school because those employees are more pliable and willing to work very long hours at a lower pay than those with experience.

The H1B visa makes the problem bigger because there is a greater supply of people who are willing to work very long hours at low salary to get their green cards.

After the H1B holder gets their green card and turns older, they face the same age discrimination that any other engineer in the USA does.

Before you argue with me, tell me where all the old engineers are. Most in this country work till they are in the mid 60's, at Intel most are gone many decades before this.

@wyh

It's not about ethnicity. Your prejudice is showing since Indian get US citizenship as quickly as possible. Most over the age of 35t are Americans or in the pricess. I understand change is hard and the reason for your fear. We are more similar then you think, my biggest concern is raising two good kids and getting them the best education possible. I am sure yours is no different. Our kids may even be friends at Cupertino.

Immigration is hard but first generation Immigrants start more businesses than anyone else. EVEN intel had Eastern Euopean roots. What you are saying has been said about Jews, Jews could not buy in Beverly Hills 50 years ago, now they own 25% of BH.

Intel is in a tough place, it may not survive but get replaced by other things like driverless cars. The future is bright but scary it always is let's work togther as American, or peple who love and admire America.

being xenophobic or insular won't work

Peace brother

Intel is now full of Indians. WeWe could even say they are the majority. Let's see how the company does. I suspect the termites will eat the host alive then move on to the next great company.

@hps you are right India is poor growing fast, has a Space program, pharma, nuclear, high tech all just getting off The ground.

Obvious you are in fear. How could such a poor place send people to USA and in one generations they are the Deans of best Universities, starting companies, become the boss, VP, CEO. On top of that they are dark like blacks. Of course you represent the worst of America the scared 10%, you can not compete on a global basis. The other 90% of America sees you as the past when certain people had to go the back of the bus. People like you hate American Judges of Mexican descent, Blacks.....you are full of fear....when we live in the best of times. You are nothing new

@@hps post your sat and college Transcript bet you did not go to Call Tech or MIT. Bet you were barely a B student. Your SAT placed you average, below average for MIT. You are going to vote for Trump, you are a Born again a religon which did not exist till last 50 years. You oppose blacks, hispanics and Jews.

I bet you don't have a PE license and can't pass the test. And I will be your bosses boss if I stay at Intel.

I am happy to post my credentials, after you.

@hnr- You are spot on! You pointed why the H1B Visa system is being abused by corporations and nothing will change as long as they are in the pockets of politicans.

Looks like speaking the truth gets Indians upset. You guys are really nothing special. 1 bn people and you have an economy smaller than most European countries with 5% of your population. Your country is an absolute basket case. You are here because you are cheap and can be owned like a dog.

Good point STEM is ignored I don't see any of our leaders kids going into STEM, Engineering let's see Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Regan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2. CARTER was a engineer. Tell me where do engineers come from?

This is going the way of blame the other. When did cost and quality get thrown out the door. A H1 w a undergrad and often a MS just performs better. He or she typically writes better English then the average six pack Joe. Not always but often. He or she has been raised by one set of parents and two set of grandparents.

The problem is better summed up by our current presidential nominee one who has been married three times catching up to the Islamic tradtion. His father and mother in laws are younger than him. How many of his kids are Engineers, Engineers drive innovation. We have a society culture that does not value

but degrades education.

Look at ARMH technical staff and where they came from. THE NEXT ARM could be chinese.

US has 50 years before it becomes Britan, let's not squander the opp in Nano tech, energy, transport we have more opputunity then people. Engineers need to do more start ups, not look for a job. Does anyone think Intel in 25 years or even 10 will be the innovator. Life is hard very hard all we have is opputunity.

@ItWBUoj-hnr you are so stupid, we'd hire an American citizen or green card in a heartbeat faster and easier. It has nothing to do with money, salary is set by school, experience and market rate for the skills you have. The sorry reason tech companies hire H1B is they need smart people, don't you know who ranks at the bottom in STEM. How many American educated white boys can speak more than English and can't even do their own taxes?

American tech hires H1B as the need educated people, not some american educated dumb A$$ who only wants a union protected job!

America citizens if you want to see fewer H1Bs then get your kids to study STEM, it is hard work starting in grade school. Forget the Dr, Lawyer and finance direction, have your boys and girls work hard and study math, physics and such.

Right now if you want Phd in any of the STEM they are almost all foreign born and educated and come to the USA for the great education, it is your own fault that your tax payer money pays foreigners because your own children and you are too lazy to take advantage of your own tax dollars.

American companies want educated workers not those that just want a quick buck like Lawyers, Doctors and bankers/finance clowns. America was built on hard work, laywers cant sue America to greatness, Doctors can treat america to greatness, Finance can't finance america to greatness.

More H1B duh!!

Let's not pull punches here. H1bs are attractive for multiple reasons: cheaper than natives, less likely to switch employees for better compensation and can be controlled and forced to work in unreasonable situations and environments. Many Indians falsely believe they are vilified due to race but the reality is this corrupt visa policy is systematically undermining worker rights at a dramatic pace that have been established through many struggles over the decades.
