Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Where can the biggest cuts occur?

I've only worked in a couple of the global BU's in my 15 years at COP. I don't have a good feel for where the big cuts can occur. Any ideas? If I had to hazard a guess, I'd suspect Canada, L48, Australia, UK. I bet Alaska will see minimal impact, as well as some of the Asia Pacific (outside Australia).

Frustrating to see how poorly the last few years have been managed from an HR perspective. I've worked in many companies in the Private and Public sectors and have never encountered such low morale and so many about-faces!

Based on what I've seen, heard, and experienced the following locations and groups should be hit the hardest (in no particular order):

  1. Houston complex corporate groups

  2. Bartlesville

  3. Eagle Ford Development

  4. Bakken Development

  5. Mid-Con Development

  6. Niobrara folks in Houston

  7. UK

  8. D&C groups worldwide

They need to start with Corporate...Wells Excellence comes to mind.

Once again you have certain individuals that justify there existence by creating useless make work projects around the globe that add little to no value.

Let the BU's handle their business. Can you imagine the money the BU's could really generate for the organization if you didn't have a bunch of board individuals sitting at corporate wasting our time with useless Skype meetings every week...

I think the biggest cuts will occur in Corporate (Houston and Bartlesville offices both), L48, and Canada. Alaska probably won't see major cuts unless they are sold off.

Side note: you can't blame HR for low morale in any company, including COP. The low morale and "about-faces" are a direct impact of poor leadership. That includes everyone sitting at the ELT table and the next level reports. Anyone in the Leadership Forum of COP should feel embarrassed and ashamed of their performance. Yes, that includes several HR leaders who have not been successful in influencing better decisions, particularly in terms of how this downturn has impacted people. But to say you are only frustrated with HR, that's missing the boat.
