Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

What a difference in fortunes between TSMC and Intel

One had process leadership, once, had the silicon growth driver, once. Had the opportunity to fabricated a game changing new paradigm in computing. Yes Steve Jobs offered Intel the opportunity to manufacture an ARM core that would have powered another 300 million units of silicon per quarter. But x86 is the only thing Intel seems to care about, so what happened

We have declining unit volume, fab closures, declining fab starts, dropping revenue, dropping profits and of course layoffs and more layoffs as each successive generation has little to compel the people to upgrade their PCs.

While on the other side of the business. TSMC had growth above expectation, growth fueled by the most important device that eveyone has in their pocket, that they upgrade every two years for fashion and value. They now out invest everyone but Samsung, they are growing like gain busters fueled by the CPU, modem that Intel turned down, they have a roadmap that is pulling ahead of intel.

One has lost the virtuous cycle, the other is only starting to harvest the bounty of the virtuous cycle.

If you are TMG grunt time to move east, the ship is sinking! I remember the days where with every generation one company used to build new factories, now that company is in the Far East that builds bigger and bigger with each generation, while the one on the west has severe shrinkage.

TSMC pays premium to keep and attract top tier engineers and mngrs, see what we are willing to pay for new hires and what tier of people we hired, and see what kind of people we failed to keep!

I remember I saw a foil from Netflex saying that NFLX is dedicated to offer the most competitive package to attract the best talent.

It was a guess or flip of the coin. I can do the same.

What's interesting is that Murthy is the one who abandoned TSMC and switched to Samsung fabs. Boy what a disaster.

PCs down 5% the volume continues to shrink. If and when 10nm comes on line Intel will only need two factories to supply the volume; eenie ( Ireland ), meenie ( Isreal ), miney ( Arizona ), mo ( Oregon ) has got to go soon. Intel to protect margins simply can't afford little fabs compared to TSMC and Samsung Gigafabs where they have huge economies of scale and flexibility. Gone are the days of growth where intel built fabs like drunken sailors, ever since they passed on the iPhone and ARM they will continue to see declining volumes, shrinking margins.
