Obama got his photo op for the 2012 election during the construction of Fab42 and like everything else the inept community organizer gets involved with, it turns into an epic failure. Both he and BK could not run a lemonade stand or lead water downhill.
The volume was and IS in mobile.

It is interesting how they've managed the PR pretty successfully on this up until now. When I told people, years ago, that Intel was starting to have trouble, the response I always got was "But they just built that huge new fab in Arizona! And are still putting up the new plant in Hillsboro! They must be doing fine!" Then I'd tell them the factory was doing nothing and had been moth-balled, folks were shocked. Even some of my colleagues inside Intel did not realize this was the case. To be fair, you have to build factory capacity well in advance of when you need it. They just didn't ever get the demand they thought would happen because they did not consider or properly react to the decline of the PC and the fact that they couldn't get into mobile, no matter what.
Haha. Article states "manufacturing is Intel's heart and joy". Really! Get real. BK has pretty much dumped the factories. In the article, it shows this a--hole's smug mug, just laughing his way to the bank.
Remember that Obama trumpeted fab42 as a sign of the country's improving economy.

I worked at Ocotillo site back then when they announced that they were going to build F42 and the word was that they needed the extra capacity for Apple. They put the cart ahead of the horse and now are paying for it. I wonder if they still have a Plant Manager in the Org slotted for it? I'll do it for 1/5 of what they are paying their cronie to baby sit an empty shell.

2 and half years and two layoffs to figure out ARM matters, I figure it'll be two more layoffs and a split of TMG and Product before the ship stops listing
Beside Apple, Samsung who else really needs 10nm or 7nm at leading edge?
The 70million LG if it materializes on 10nm will be less silicon area than the 22nm Tablet and how many wafer starts were there.
Intel needs to consider how much 10nm capacity is out there from TSMC and Samsung and think thru the competitive disadvantages on their side. Sure LG is worth a few thousand wafers or so but that is a drop in the bucket compared to what TSMC/Samsung run for their collective high volume and hundred other customers that will show up on their 10nm and 7nm over the next three years.
Does intel fabs know how to run x86 and than another 10-20 other low volume products with great customer service?
Then you got the value and yield issues as well to consider. Intel will fail at Foundry, Simply put nobody will put their future product in intel's hands as the sole or lead source when Intel has it;s own future server and client that is more important and makes far more money on their process than any fabless The only reason anyone puts Intel in play is as a bargaining chip with TSMC, nothing more.
Till Intel splits TMG and production foundry will languish and F42 will stay empty
Fab 42 is another complete waste and will probably never be used. Intel should sell this albatross. Of course, we can blame BK for pushing the building of this thing while the PC market was in decline.
