Look on the bright side! Why would you want to be at Intel now?
I'm old enough to remember when HS was plenty for anything because of extensive on the job training and the belief that you were joining a company for life. Then there was the Vietnam war and a college deferment was the way to escape the draft. That was the first step toward devaluating HS and inflating college. To the point where college was the new HS diploma. Now, college is not good enough--it better be a STEM degree and at least a masters and preferably PhD. Kids are telling me they are twiddling their thumbs in HS these days because no learning happens there--college BS is the absolute minimum and in many fields PhD is absolutely necessary. Overseas PhD mills are catering to the education inflation. btw, neither Bill Gates nor Steve Jobs nor Mark Zuckerberg graduated from college.
Due to the STEM shortage, they raised hiring requirements. Wait...
It's degree inflation because "they can." The 2008-2009 recession created an excess of college graduates looking for jobs. Every company bumped up the education requirements one level.
A new B.S. in engineering can do great at Intel.
Why are you blaming degree mills in india? The us universities have turned into the same thing salivating at the fat tuitions they charge the foreign students as well as out of state students. Many us univs have lowered not only their admission standards but also operating standards to accommodate droves of indian and chinese students coming in and are in a pissing comptition wrt each other to attract these stdudents by competitively lowering the hurdles so they can maximize their intake. This is no different than sovereign govts competitively devaluing currency to get export share. Tell me who is the greedy one here? Us ubivs have converted foreign stdents into a big business the only way they keep coming is if they get jobs here and some one is working hard to make sure that keeps happening. A HS diploma qualifies you to be an auto mechanic and solve problems something PhD Process engineers who study for years aren't, be happy you aren't hired by the company, LOL
These were the good old days when there was a sense of fairness and pride. Companies like Intel were much better respected for the training they provided their employees. The employees ended up showing passion for their job and the company. Thanks to obnoxious, condescending, cold people like BK, this atmosphere and reciprocity between company and employee will never exist again.
Not I. I wasn't aware of Intel for decades. Probably my 30's. I didn't have a computer till my early 30s.
They needed more manual labor at that time. Manufacturing firms all hired right out of high school and trained in house. Things were very different then. There were dozens of technicians that only loaded and unloaded tools and ran monitors. You did not need a degree to do that. Many of them learned the business though and worked their way up. American businesses no longer do that unless you want to go to school. To be fair Intel provided that opportunity for people.
