Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

NOV Management Spyware Common

Got laid off in Cedar Park a few days ago. 50 in the last several weeks. Told more to follow. Turned in my computer. Showed by an IT Tech that NOV had secretly installed a digital manager spyware app. As soon as I checked work email on my private phone they were monitoring every call, text, email, IM and keystroke I ever hit. Immoral if not illegal. Have your provider remove the app from your phone. Tech said it is common in La, Ok and Tx. Now being used world wide by corporate HQ.

The OP is correct. NOV sent out an email to employees instructing them to install an attached app that would allow NOV to remotely read/copy/delete data on the employees PERSONAL TELEPHONE. The employee was also required to sign paper stating that they approved. The company issued phones/computers already had this installed. There was a flippin' uproar at CP over this and it was addressed by sr mgt. in the monthly all hands meeting. NOV cannot legally do this without the employee's permission and I know of NO ONE who gave them permission or signed the paper work. From the day of the email forward I never allowed my phone to use the wireless network in the building, and only used (as others have said) the Microsoft Web app to access email when needed.

If you cannot trust your employees to take care of your business, get rid of them. If you are an employee being paid in cash and benefits you are an idiot/criminal to hand out the companies information no matter what company you work for.

If you install software from a coporate entity such as NOV, or use your personal device to access services provided by same, then you are a naive fool to belive there is no tracking or logging going on, even if its just for 'service quality' monitoring. When they tried the app thing / encrypting your device at CP, we even stopped using the company wifi on our devices and switched to personal 4g - fk that st!

To be fair, they have to cover their own a***s, you could be a terrorist, child molester, or even Mike Matta :)

Don't use their stuff for your personal affairs or complaining about them you dumba**s......

Nope, it's true. They tried this in CP and wanted to put an "app" on our PERSONAL phones. There was quite an uproar over it and we refused. I only accessed email through the Microsoft web mail app and never directly through NOV.

OP clearly says his private phone. He says, when he checked his work email from his private phone, NOV installed a spyware/malware on his phone and started monitoring his phone calls, texts and internet activity.

I call BS.

It's very illegal. Contact EEOC and an attorney.

Private phone? Or do you mean the phone that NOV was paying the charges for, or in other words, still the property of NOV. I find it hard to believe that any company would put spyware on a private phone and besides, how would they even get access to your "private phone" anyhow.

Like I said previously, always assume you are being watched / recorded and that includes all emails and conversations on a company phone. Just don't say or do something stupid and you won't have to worry.

" If the computer system / phone is the property of a company..."

He says they installed it on his PERSONAL PHONE

"As soon as I checked work email on my private phone they were monitoring every call, text, email, IM and keystroke I ever hit"

Typo in my message above. I mean "if I say something that could be taken as an offense to a boss etc., I DON'T SAY IT".

Nah, I don't think it is illegal. If the computer system / phone is the property of a company, they have the right to monitor anything / everything on it. I always keep that in mind while at any job and think before I type or search the internet. If it is something that I think could be of offense to a boss etc., I say it. Laid off many months ago in a mass-layoff and not trying to defend the company. Just stating the facts of what it means to work for an employer.

Move on and take it as a lesson learned.

What is the name of the app on the phone and the utility on the PC?

Not even a little bit. I was stunned. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't delete my NOV email account off my phone till he showed me what they had installed electronically. Seriously, if you do anything NOV related on your private phone go in to your service provider and have them remove the spyware. Then only use the phone on your desk at work or it will automatically be reinstalled and they will be monitoring all your activity. ALL of it. Even when you are on vacation or away from work.
