The invisible hand is doing it's work. Resources and people will be reallocated to more productive companies. Intel is the only big company in the area not building out new offices and growing. This company will shrink to fit a much smaller market need.

I don't have a cell phone because I'm old-school I guess. I don't see why people can't EVER put their phones down. They carry them around in their hands everywhere, barely looking where they are walking (or driving, for that matter). To me, I don't need to have a phone superglued to my hand. Rarely is anything that important that it can't wait for me to return home and check for a voicemail.
As for still having a desktop (which I just bought a few months back, btw)... not sure why I'd need a computer away from my desk. lol Especially when everything I do on a computer requires a large monitor. Like the cell phone, I don't feel the need to carry one around with me. * shrug *
I don't think my thinking that way warrants saying I'm like the Amish pondering cars. And on the topic of cars... I didn't get my license in high school (I'm actually against kids driving, I think that should be reserved for the more mature and everyone knows (except teens, of course) that teens are anything but mature at age 16!!! Sorry, they just aren't). I got my license in my 20s.
@IHG2uGO-nlr you clearly have no appreciation for weather than, LOL. When Intel weathered multiple issues in the early times it was very different than the competitive and technological landscape today. To spew that kind of BS is almost laughable as the troll that post things about indian curry.
@IHG2uGO-kce So a question do you appreciate the lifestyle changing impact of laptops and smartphones. I can appreciate you don't have one but anyone who doesn't appreciate the mobile change from laptops/wifi and smartphones and fast wireless might as well be an Amish sitting on a horse drawn carriage debating the cars.
@IHG2uGO-fod Servers can absolutely NOT sustain 50-70K the whole x86 stack is under assault. Intel was the one that turned the tables on mainframes, minicomputers, workstations by pushing a higher volume platform with huge continuous improving value and growing ecosystem that they other's couldn't compete with. Now the mobile rise with almost the whole world with an ARM powered smartphone and billions more ARM powered devices makes for an ARMy of manufacturing and software echo system with economies of scale Intel can't compete by withdrawing to servers as their revenue and profit core. It will totally fail, no different than companies like DEC, WANG, CRAY all fell to x86, now x86 will fail to the ARMy.
No the combination of slowing of Moore's' law the slip in 22, 14nm and huge slip in 10 and continued dogmatic hanging on to x86 by PSO/BK have pushed the company in a direction that will assure it's implosion.
There is still a window of maybe two years for a radical redirection but everything I've seen, the push to 5G/Modems, IoT, Memory and of course same old same old says no change at all in the fate!

I don't think all is well at Intel but I don't have a smart phone (or any cell for that matter) and I'm still using a desktop. it sounds like a derogatory remark that anyone without a smartphone and still on a desktop are delusional or something.
@wsi - weathered bigger storms? Really? Which ones? There was/is none bigger than mobile. Intel failed. I guess you do not have a smart phone....still using desktops and thinking all is well...
Yeah the sky is falling right? Intel has weathered bigger storms before and survived they can do that now if the company can turn around. Citing some anecdotes and calling for end is not how you make a case
Have you actually priced Intel rack servers? How about NIC cards? The ASP is what Google, FB, Amazon are working on to change. You think these companies want to buy from Intel and pay for huge margins? HELL NO. One clue..look what at what companies like Amazon has purchased in the last two years....also look at what server software is being used...clue..it is NOT microsoft..it is all RedHat or some version..uber cheap... Servers and all things networking is a race to the bottom..just like the PC. At Fred-Myers here in Oregon I just saw plenty of laptops with Win-10 for $250. and $299. Only thing Intel can do..of which they are NOT doing ..is downsize to around 60K today..and then around 40K to sustain. Do it now while you are cash strong..or else.
I hope they survive well and evemtually thrive. Their client and server revenues can easily sustain a headcount of say 60 to 70k and provide a steady dividend if they dont deemphasize these areas as they are doing now without being only growth focused. However the temptation to drive stock high is too great for the management and they seem to be doing it at the cost of core revenue areas without a great vision that everyone beleives in for future growth. That has the risk of getting worst of the worlds where you neither get growth nor keep core business revenues. The growth needs to be done incrememtally with risk control else they are a stock market speculator buying penny dtocks for a 10x gain we knoe how that movie ends.
