Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

Upcoming Layoffs at Marathon

Why hasn't Marathon done an effective job at shedding the enormous amount of people who are wandering the halls of the company with no specific roles and not enough to do. It seems ineffective to say the least during these difficult times to have employees moved from one place to another just to keep them on the payroll. These are the times to get rid of the dead wood, reorganize, restructure and be more efficient.

HR personnel are always out. We should lease the floor out. They show up late and leave early. Very strange behavior but it has been going on for months. They have a different set of rules starting from the top.

That's really great to hear. Why don't you get the hundreds of people wandering the hallways of the tower to do some useful work....?

Well, we seem to have the worst approach in the industry and we are sure handling this "crisis" ineffectively. Start shedding those people who don't have roles and don't have anything to do. I think that will help the bottom line.

This is not only happening to Marathon Oil...... most other majors are having the same situation... there is nothing to do because of the uneconomical project terminations, slow downs, deferred projects. The innovative managers are shaking their hands in the air to make them looks busy..... having unnecessary meetings to appear engaging in productive discussion (review past projects, hazard studies......)

This is sign of the time for all the oil companies, big and small.

I've seen the depressed look and "lack of activity" expression in everyone around me, in the hallway and on each floor at the tower. Something needs to give ..... Cleanup time !

I would have to agree.... it all comes from the top. There will never be hope of proper management of the business, the company or the people while we continue to have this type of management.....

I can see where this company is going.

Sounds to us there should be a healthy correlation between streamlining of company activities and the number of people employed. If the company has changed direction, is not really in the Gulf of Mexico anymore, and the business plan has changed, why aren't they making similar intelligent decisions on the payroll. That HR department needs a complete overhaul so that they provide insightful advice on proper handling of the human resources for the company.

What an awful management our company has. It used to be much more effective, in many ways.

I see all the people wandering around the hallways.... And employees are out all the time...... yet still receiving a full time salary. Quite shameful and very unethical !!

Accounting has too many people sitting around, and the regulatory ladies are sitting around trying to look busy. There is this lady that got into a "project" situation, and she doesn't know what she's doing....!!! What about HR.... they are always out. Is someone in charge here???

I come to work at Marathon everyday wanting to do my best, roll up my sleeves, and contribute. The day that I have to sit around like that.... I will do something about it.... just for my conscience.... Keeping all these extra people on the payroll who are not earning their keep .... how is that effective for the company ?? How does it help the bottom line....?

I have worked for Marathon for 7 years and when it comes to letting people go, instead of gauging the value they add, favoritism and friendship is what counts. The HR people are behind the ball when it comes to assertiveness and effective management. It is obvious that they are not providing the role of guidance to management. We see too many idle people in so many departments. What gives ??

If the strategy of the company has changed, as we know it has, why can't actions be aligned with that.

It always just boils down to poor leadership, all around.

Crazy !
