"I recognize Intel is a 55 Billion a year corporation" Per Otellini, Intel should be at 100 Million dollars this year. Doubt Intel will go out of business anytime soon but it has peeked in earnings unless they get visionaries in there to run the show unlike the current crop who couldn't run a lemonade stand.

Silicon R&D and manufacturing is one of the most expensive undertakings and to reap the benefits best to have huge scale. Today x86 scale pales compared to the volume Samsung and TSMC move with each generation of Galaxy and iPhone. Intel x86 sales still drawf what Aps processor sell for, but volumes for them are simply huge, too huge for intel to ignore if they want to stay relevant.

If intel is bold they would leverage their ARM license and showcase their design and process prowess with a compelling aps processor on 14nm and 10nm that the tier 2 phone makers could adopt. The volumes would help their foundry and build credibility to intel capability. Do this for a generation or two than they could do a repeat of what swung Apple from PowerPC to x86. That would be the ultimate coup to get Apple to come do their silicon at Intel and re-establish intels as the dominate silicon supplier.

Right now the perception is Samsung and TSMC are soon to become the leaders as they are the fab of choice smartphones.

This IOT trust going to be ARM based the only role x86 has is in the cloud data arena. So Intel must establish ARM leadership, x86 is important but time to move the company. This is like MS moving from windows and office suite as a strategic thrust .

55 billion

What about net income?

What about debt burden?

What about the cash cow falling off a cliff and exponentially rising fab costs with flat income?

You people have no vision. Think for a moment about what those trends mean for the future of Intel's financial health.

@fqm- I bet you were one of those people back in 2006 that said "why should we do a collaboration with Apple to develop a chip for smartphones"? How did that work out?

Why do you people continue to try and smell out doom and gloom for the largest best chip maker in the world? Because you were laid off? I was laid off by Intel and I recognize Intel is a 55 Billion a year corporation who doesn't fear competing. Intel will be fine. Stop with the non-sense.
