Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Interesting that Apple gave life to Intel by choosing x86 over PowerPC. Now is killing Intel by choosing ARM over x86.

No Intel leader could ever foresee this. Purely and simple, Intel missed the next wave of computing by not learning from its own victory on Intel having a superior roadmap, according to Jobs. Now Intel is in the new loser.

@1dtj x86 would be around as a commodity like a or washer

@IAc8kAG-1dtj. I wouldn't holding water in any failed MS projects. Their past track record has been deplorable for a company with so much resources; Windows and Nokia among many other under Balmer. In many ways MS failure to leverage their monopoly is similar to CRB/PSO and BK currently.

Not that Apple hasn't had issues but they have done two ports already and the fact they do both OS X and iOS under the same roof. With the iPad pro I am certain a full port to ARM is just a Cook decision away. I think as at 10nm or 7nm any advantage x86 will be gone and the case for all ARM will move the MAC to the ARMy

MS already tried running Windows on ARM. Surface failed spectacularly due to lack of backward compatibility and performance issues. I'm sure Apple is facing similar challenges. It's not to say Intel doesn't need to innovate to stay competitive, but it's premature to declare x86 dead.

@IAc8kAG-osz "Intel is a $55 B dollar corporation. Their earnings are actually quite stable. Did it ever cross your mind that you missed the wave and not Intel? 5 years from now you will come back and see Intel will still be here and fine." LOL sounds like leaders/engineers at DEC, WANG and others. The same play was made in PCs Compaq, Gateway and others have become extinct. Now x86 had some survivors to and they are almost all gone, than the last one will soon perish to. In technology it is all about evolve or DIE.

All thru the last two decades Intel could easily have funded multiple process and design projects for the next wave; ARM but they continued to be delusional and dogmatic that just wait, one more generation of process and two more design cycles and they'd be better. Opps billions of ARMy sold this year on 28nm, 20nm, and 16nm has funded TSMC, Samsung, UMC and others to build and push more silicon. Intel on the other hand is consolidating and laying off as volumes drop. The servers are next, it isn't a matter of it, but only when. No different than when x86 started server competition and DEC and ever other performance computing company laughed at them, till the hundred million overwhelmed the few hundred thousand, now the billions will over-run the hundred millions, LOL

@osz I can tell you don't know anything about engineering.

Yes, in 5 years Intel will be making 14nm data center replacement parts as a shop with only 200 employees.

@IAc8kAG-nuh Remember iOS was ported from 6800 to PowerPC than to x86. The port to ARM already exists so it is an executive decision from Cook to make Apple all ARM. You can argue MS could do it too, but lucky for intel MS has no strategic advantage to do so 'Yet'

@osz- Intel will be fine 5 years from now with the samexception earnings as today with 50,000 less employees. No where near the projected 100 Billion they were predicting several years ago.

Moore's Law is dead and when it does so does intel. Intel has now strategy for products that aren't based on the next generation showing up. Tell me where Canonlake is?

Without volumes intel can't develop the process. The ARMy has taken over!

"Annual smartphone sales will rise to close to 2bn units and PC sales fall to close to 200m while the smartphone install base will rise from 2.5bn to close to 5bn and the PC install base fall from today's 1.5bn to closer to 1bn (if that). So mobile has 10x the unit volume and 5x the install base "

Uh, IBM gave Intel life by choosing it for the original IBM PC.

You're looking like a dumba$$ by not knowing this very basic piece of tech history.
