Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Fab 11x?

I work as an engineering tech in F11x. None of the management will tell us anything about layoffs or shutdown. They keep us in the dark for for unknown reasons. I have seen many early retirements. Is retirement just another word for layoff?

Does anyone know what is going on with Fab 11x?

Yeah, I wouldn't bank on photonics. Its been a pipe dream for 20 years now. But in theory, if lightning strikes and silicon photonics goes mainstream, then Fab 11x may be the premier global fab for that process.

I also work in F11x. I'm riding this sucker till I get my factory closing bonus!! My suggestion to you is to get cozy with a Photonics development engineer, preferably with a PhD. Ask them what's coming up as far as development goes. My guess is that once we have exhausted Photonics development at 35nm, we are done as a fab. That's the only reason Intel is keeping us around. All of our manufacturing can easily be done in China, Ireland, Israel, etc. All the good people are gone already. Its too late to start up something major again. Why would they?

My boss told us that a major announcement is coming by the end of summer. Hopefully its our upcoming closure date! I'm looking forward to it, ready to start something new. My advice to you is to be prepared: pay all your bills, update your resume/cover letter, be prepared to relocate. I already did this stuff. Don't leave everything until the last minute.

Why are so many trolls attacking a F11x employee? Are there really dozens of flabby belly 40 year old virgin man-children living in mom's basement? With nothing better do to than harass a real worker. Do you realize your IP is being tracked on this website?

Early retirement isn't always another word for laidoff. For some, yes, for others, no. For me, I became eligible to retire under the Rule of 55 last year. I waited (not so patiently) for a package because I was done working. It came and I took it. It's always been the plan. For others, I don't think it's another word for laidoff either... they had the option to take it (unlike the VSP that came with pretty strong language pushing people to take it "or else" Not exact words but darn close).

If it was me, and I still needed a job, I'd look elsewhere, but that's me. I'm just happy to be gone. :)

OP here, thanks for the advice from a few of you. It's much appreciated. As for the rude comments you can shove it up your azz. I'd be quite happy to confront you in person wherever you are tough guys. I love a good rumble now and then. Post your email here and I will get in touch.

I have a side business on slow run right now, it's time to ramp up and suck as much money out of Intel while I run a real business on the side.

People retiring are getting out while the getting is good.

F11X management isn't telling you about the future because, either:

  1. They don't know themselves, there are different possibilities for the site, and it's just one ambiguous mess.

  2. They do know it will close (perhaps not exactly when, but with only a month or two uncertainty) and they don't want the workforce to bolt out the door. The good people are the first to leave.

  3. They're depending on a miracle to happen.

When the closure is announced, Intel will likely pay a bonus to those workers who work to the very end. At minimum, you can get that bonus.

If you would feel more secur having a longer term job, start looking now. Once you find one you like, resign from Intel.

Look at the signs around you. The site is going to close in the near future (< 1 year).

If you hunt back carefully using jobs online you will see about 3 to 4 months ago some internal only jobs were offered exclusively to high grade techs in Fab11x to relo up to Oregon. They were paid for this relocation.

That's all you need to know. It is over down there. If you see Christmas 2017 as an Intel employee it will literally be the greatest comeback since lazarus..

I bailed from there (VSP). They lost so many people they can't run some areas/shifts. What is scary is that they don't seem to care.

There is no road map beyond next year.

Stick a fork in it. It's done.

All signs point to the fab being up for sale. All non-fab related folks are being told they're jobs are moving. Some being offered relo, some not. Tool transfers from F11x are on hold. People eligible for ERP were likely encouraged to take it. Fab manager gone, new fab manager from F28 that has spent time in AZ. He'll probably return to IS after being the closer. If sold, I suppose people will be given the option to transfer to the new owner. They'll need people. If it were simply closing I would see them not extending relo offers to non-fab people. Best of luck there. A bummer situation any way you look at it.
