Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Question for long time employees who have been through this before

Is every RIF at Seagate like this one where everyone knows the exact date over a month in advance, or is this just the most poorly managed RIF in history?

Its kind of funny about that adavance notice question. I've seen the layoff paperwork that says that management, probably director and above, has the power to give adavance notice or more accurately give someone notice the same day as others but let certain employees stay on for up to a month afterward. The reason this is uncommon likely trust. Directors and above are paid 100k plus so the company buys there trust in a sense. In those positions, the company knows that a person will still behave, or look out for a company, for up to a month after being told of their laid off. For the rest of us who think we are important and trustworthy, think again. The company is fully aware that someone making only 40-70k a year is little more than a schlep wearing a tie with no where near the same level of dedication. Companies typically precalculate there is a higher risk that these lowered paid employees may carelessly or even purposely fuk something up in the business before their last day because the company set the low terms of trust when they set the low salaries - in short they know they used you more than you used them and they know you will figure that out if you seriously ponder on it for a month. I imagine it would take some extreme circumstance for Seagate to give advance warning to a low level employee\manager. The only time I see that happening would be for someone who was the grandson of an exec who happened to already give notice for a leave of absense to attend seminary school. haha. that's the way business works.

Do work? You gotta be kidding. Yer gonna git laid off. Instead, sit at your desk and do work in looking for your next job. My opinion: you are a bunch of winers. Try getting laid off in 2009, where you next job was 20 months away. That was fun. So grow up.

What do you expect? They manage layoffs just as well as they manage employee's personal W2 data. I've never seen a company with so many unhappy people wishing to be laid off. Oh well, if you're not laid of this time...there will be another chance...and another....way of life working for Seagate. Do the minimum amount of work until your layoff time comes.

You'll get an email or a phone call from your manager around 9:00 - 10:00 AM on the day of the layoffs.

You assume they manage it at all. It's a disaster every time. The employee doesn't really mean anything to them, so they're not really concerned with the affects on morale. The only thing they care about is meeting that insane dividend every quarter. Pretty sure they don't want to be a hard drive company anymore.

Our Management is as adept at keeping the RIF details under wraps as they are at leadership and execution in the technical and business realms.

Also, they are equally adept and judging their own performance in this matter as they are in those other areas.

So in their eyes, they are doing a Great, Great Job.
