Instead of getting HR and managers together to round up employees who are already on pins and needles just to tell them they are being let go, something more creative might work better..
Seagate could set up some layoff challenges where potential lay off-ees can compete get a reprieve from furlough. Seagate could set up a "choose your adventure" type of scenario. Lay off-ees could select to participate in things like a scavanger hunt, or a hotdog eating contest, or maybe chug beers while riding a tricycle around an office obstacle course. At least that way, people could actually have a chance to save their careers.
Seagate could also offer a let it ride option to any contest winners where they could challange any member of mgt or HR to replay the game they just won. Then the winner of that game gets a bonus and the loser gets laid off.
Finally for anyone laid off, they could set up a relaxation area where they can spend a little time to calm their zen. Each Seagate location should set up an area where there is some sitar music playing, some insense burning, and the guru of their choice is offering advice on love and careers. Later anyone can hang out to share some of that tea they had in Zoolander with that employee that you secretly admired.
