Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

If there is any BUs safe for the next 5-10 years, it would be NSG and servers.imo. iOTG is just a hype, what do you guys think.

Safe?

Bahahahahahaaaaaa

Listen moron - nothing is safe. 10 years ago there was no smartphone. You think anything is stable in tech?

Jesus Christ - we have some real geniuses here at this company.

Semiconductors are very low on the value stack. They will become commoditized further when Moore's law ends as everyone will get to the same node and run fully depreciated fabs.

Staking your career at a semi firm is foolish. Get into software or something else higher in the value chain.

ioT at Intel will likely last 5-10 years but as everyone has already stated, the margins will be narrow and volume needs to be high. I don't think IoT as an industry is hype at all - it's just a fact. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that's where society is going with technology. It's the next logical step. Saying "IoT is hype" is the 2002 equilivant to saying mobile smart phone were all hype. Intel folks hated the Atom for it's narrow margins and look where we are now.

Agree that high margins for Intel are a history, no matter what Intel forays into post PC, it will be a cut throat market with razor thin margins. Intel can no longer be a long term career company.

IoT has to hit volumes in order to succeed. There is no margin when boards are selling below $50. Altera does bring the possibility of custom hardware, but whether we have an edge there is yet to be seen.

I'm not sure if the OP is sincere or joking, but no job is safe for 5 or 10 years! Entire industries have come and gone in less time.

"Altera SKUs... have NOTHING to do with IoT"

@1aij - You're an idiot. One of Altera's major strategic initiatives is to accelerate the growth of IoT with FPGAs and SoCs. Altera SKUs have plenty to do with IoT. Sounds like you've never even looked at the Altera products.

IoT and the new devices group have a few partnerships on various products right now so to say that the IoT group has no interest or business with Altera's FPGAs is absolutely wrong. There was a much larger strategy behind that acquisition than you realize.

I thought many IoT devices had FPGAs inside of them. Is this incorrect?

IoT is ECG, they've made money at high margin for a while. But nothing is really safe.

last poster don't now $hit. Altera products are going to save intel, right.

We bought altera as custom FPGA hardware acceleration is become a key feature for enabling faster custom hardware. We hope that our overspend there will make our x86 more compelling.

You know what they can do the same thing with Nvida or ARM chips too.. nothing special about the Altera SKUs that will help Intel, and they have NOTHING to do with IoT, LOL

@tuk what do you mean?

Look, as long as we own the technology on a 133 different FPGA products and SKU numbers (i.e. Altera) then IoT at Intel is not going to disappear. It's definitely safe for a good long while.

IoT and memory, two commodity product lines where intel has no competitive advantage at all NONE.

Anybody who thinks IoT is a good investment is smoking something good.

Nothing is safe, maybe Servers as a stand alone unit. But even ther ARM offers near parity of they get software there. But if process improvement stops there is no reason for cloud to stay with x86 as arm is two generations behind and will get at least 4 more product cycle improvements while x86 will be stalked

No the whole company is one big Kodak like sinking ship
