Truth in this post:
Anything personal on your computer should be moved to a device you own. Even though they'll tell you you're still employed for another few weeks, your computer access is immediately terminated. I know from a friend who was let go. As far as the process goes, he said it was pretty straightforward, unceremonious, and fast. You're given documentation to prove the company isn't targeting you based on age, gender, race, etc. This individual was U.S. based
No personal items should be on the PC hard drive in the first place!
If you had your phone backing up to the Seagate Gmail account, download all the pics, address book ETC
Grab a copy (backup) of the data on your phone to a machine that you own at home (IT will wipe it)
you will probably get 2 weeks pay (before 30% taxes that is).
you will have to sign the general release document to get the money.
you wil get that document in the mail about a month after you leave most likely.
when you you sign it you are also agreeing not to sue seagate which is why it is called a general release.
forward any of your personal stuff that is on a company computer to your personal email.
if you think you have been wronged by the company, mistreated, or think there is any chance that you will want to fight the layoff legally, i would forward any related emails etc to your personal email too.
make sure you get contact emails and phone numbers of friends collegues and references; once you are out you are out.
file for unemployment.
look for a new job.
Good point immediately below. Also, separation plan varies by country. Definitely pull up your country's plan from mySeagate. The policies are very clear on how the calculations work.
Read the severance pay plan documents as referred by earlier poster how to search. Some of the info given here are correct and some are not.
Clearly stress brings out the worst in some people, evidenced by comments like the one below. Maybe try less unnecessary sarcasm next time. Original poster was just looking for advice. It is sad how many snarky comments I see in these threads.
Original poster: go to mySeagate and search for "separation pay policy." The document is dated 15 June 2015. If memory serves, your 8 months' tenure will get you 2 weeks of what they call "notice pay." You haven't cleared a full year yet, so would be ineligible for any more than that.
Note, however, that usually they keep you on the books or some period of time. You could expect to still be on payroll (including benefits) from 1-2 months after the day they harvest your badge and walk you out.
Good luck.
Thank you ! Sorry for typos. HDD market is at very tough spot. I think, these layoffs will be very common at Seagate and WD.
After a whole 8 months, don't expect a big pay day.
You need to fine tune your resume.
Have a 5th grader with spell checking software go over it with you.
thank you . what will be the likely severance package plus medical benefits etc. I am mentely prepared but not sure how will I handle it on the very day ...
