Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Layoff process at Seagate

Is there any warning to those who were getting laid off or was it a complete suprise shock? Do they give you any explanation?

With layoffs supposedly coming around the corner, just curious if I should start packing my cube early.

Usually managers know only a few days before the actual date. The VPs of each department draw up the list in consultation with the directors. So just because a manager is assigning you projects does not necessarily imply that you are safe. You should utilize this time to updated your resume and start tapping your contacts. Job searching takes time 2-3 months at least and the earlier you start the process; the better off you are.

They don't just lay you off. According to their separation letter the give you the "opportunity to participate" in the reduction in force. Not that you have a choice of participating, but some super smart person thought it would be a good idea to make a bad situation more insulting by using words like opportunity and participation.

How far in advance will the manager know before the layoff? My manager is still assigning me projects.

I cleaned out my desk and took home anything I wanted to keep before the layoffs last year so I'm pretty still ready. I doubt you would have much time to go through your stuff, just pack any personal items and go. Also, if you have Seagate email on your phone, I'd back it up. Maybe they just end your access but technically, they could wipe your phone clean. And any personal items in work email/computer...forward or save those to your personal email.

There is no pre-warning. On the day of the layoff the manager will call you to his officehinform you hat you have been impacted and will explain the layoff package. The you go back to your cubicle, pack and leave.
