Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel has lost its ability to execute!

In the recent past, Intel has talked up many products which looked great on stage. But look poor when they come to market or they never make it to the market.

What was once a great engineering company now is surviving on past glory and stage presentations. They seem to have completely lost the capability to execute.

Everyone is encouraged to be leaders. On the ground workers who actually are key for execution are not valued.

Too many leaders means much too competition. And to survive, the strategies used are silo building to protect others from encroaching or empire building through striking down others.

Both of these strategies inhibit collaboration and has resulted in every single product being late to the market. Seems like now this leadership virus has also spread to Process development and for the first time ever, we lag competition.

So many re-orgs have been done with the central idea of breaking the silos. None have made any difference as culture has remained the same and people quickly find ways to build new silos and empires.

The most important skill at Intel is definitely building an internal network.

The most "successful" spend 2/3 or more of their time on it (the balance spent on eating free fruit and revising Powerpoint slides).

Having and maintaining an external network (you know with customers, external thought leaders, etc.) is a liability.

What's going on outside the Intel bubble is deemed irrelevant and introducing ideas or proposals from outside will likely be met with hostility and condescension. And then probably stolen when someone higher up the Intel chain mentions it.

The inward focus is the real problem and it is driven by focal.

With focal you are faced with the choice of 1) focusing internally and ensuring you are near/at the top of your peers: outcome EE/O 2) focusing externally and taking risks that could provide HUGE payoff to Intel but personal risk to you: outcome IR - O depending on the impact of ignoring the internal politics AND the outcome of the product in the market.

THE RATIONAL CHOICE IS TO FOCUS INTERNALLY!

"Examine carefully. . Intel failure is not due to inability to perform tactical execution. In most cases the management is late to decide on strategic direction. .. feature set for products constantly changes because nobody really knows what it takes to win.. all they know is what to write as accomplishment in their annual performance appraisal"

This is one of the side effects of being so inwardly focused (vs. customer focused).

Requirements become a political battle and competing approaches to the same basic thing proliferate in different groups and BUs across the company.

This has been permitted (encouraged) to occur for some time. And now we're paying the price.

Isn't this the reason Murthy was brought in. For all his faults he has an excellent reputation in execution if he makes everyone's life hell in the process.

Intel in decades past had many things it was good at these days what is it

1) Manufacturing, but it was late with 14nm is late with 10nm. I can only conclude no longer a strength

2) x86 monopoly, the ability to charge whatever the market will bear. No competition means little need to really innovate, just make it better and charge them the same thing. ARM and the aps processor have beat intel at the low power space, ARM is attacking everything else. Nobody wants to pay to let Intel get rich.

Time to get out, as Intel has shown no track record to execute in any new thing and make money; wireless, phones, tablets, new gizmos, nothing!

Also examine the mistakes in the making. BK talks about wearables. because Apple is in wearables. BK said we need to be in AI , because google has invested into AI. BK talks about cloud, Amazon is already in cloud computing business.

BK is good at copy exact. His strategy is to copy exactly what other people are doing.

After replacing "old farts", they believe that new young engnieers can do all the works but it is not really true. There is a reason why experienced engineers are more expensive and they become tech leads or so. Instead, the company kick out most of experieneced engineers like garbages. When I attend design review meetings, I could see lots of holes, those are discussing topics and issues but no key factors. Also, most of the time what has done would be just force the circuits to the next generation parameters. That's all, and no innovation, no circuit studies most of the time. I respect those who work hard and produce lots of simulatoin data but important design factors are missing most of the time. No wonder the company wasted lot of money for multiple tape-ins from A0.

So, I am not going to buy any product with Intel mark. I will simply dump any Intel related products in the trash can just like what Intel did to us or never buy none of'em.

Apple will use Intel chips in 50% of their products? So what? If customers say to those sellers, say Qualcom phones, or ihones whatever, "I am not gonna buy your phone with Intel inside" then those phone manufacturers will not use Intel chips. Good luck with Intel's new phone biz and I am pretty sure that she (Axxxx) will still get huge amount of $$$$$.

Intel is a manufacturing company. That's the mistake most people make when thinking about Intel. Intel wants to fabricate something and sell it for the highest margins it can. If manufacturing a Frisbee using silicon makes higher margins than CPUs, Intel would build them tomorrow. Intel is not a tech company as most of you think, they are a manufacturing company.

Because too many Indian in the company bringing very bad culture and politics. Many bad Indian managers too. Bad Indian managers destroy many excellent engineers career in Intel. Also when did you see a successful high tech product from India?
