Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Constructive posts only!

Please share your advice, comments regarding benefits after may 30 for all of us that were ISP.

What would be the best things to do for surviving the next year not working?

Thanks a lot fellows

PS: please no racists comments, we are all on the same boat so don't think all the people let go were white. And remember diversity is a good thing, imagine you were the hiring manager... Would you have hired a capable minority? Probably not so relax and don't hate because we know you are racist.

Unsure if this is just for Oregon or for Calif also. Sorry I didn't mention where I was earlier.

Re: Ask a still employed friend to look up how to get access to Lynda for free. Intel provides this, but the instructions are on circuit. Dunno what would happen to the access after may 30, but at least you'll get a week free to see if you like it. Lots of good training available.

You can access lynda.com for free from your local public library, I was just reading their newsletter WCCLS sent to me. You will need a library card in order to access. Go to wccls.org/lynda with your library card to log in.

Happy learning!

If you can keep your expenses low, you can also travel the world on $8/day like this couple.

If you're outdoorsy, you can backpack or free camp at BLM sites since summer is coming up. There's also couch surfing.

There are many possibilities depending on what you want to do.

There is a straight way to fully fund HSA via post tax dollars and then claim a deduction next year. Call benefit wallet and they will send you the form. It is very easy. So even if Intel direct deposit stops without you maxing out it can be done easily w/o loss of tax deductibility. The second thing is minimize monthly automated outflows like cell phone, cable tv, electricity, gas et. The funny thing is if you start scrutinizing you start cutting down wasteful expenditures. Best wishes my friend.

I am not OP but seriously looking out for suggestion while going through this difficult time. Thanks to all valuable comments from sincere people. But can't believe there are people that gave stupid and useless comments, do you think being jobless is fun? We have bills and children to feed!

file for unemployment on june 1st... roll over you 401k and serp into a somewhere you have more control over what you invest in. if you can drain your hsa and close it... as you will start to owe an account fee.

Be sure to take the $9k, not the 12 months of medical. You get 18 months of cobra total, intel pays the first 6. You can pay for it after 6 months if you want it, but you can drop things like dental or vision if you don't need them. And for my family of four, the cost for 6 months of cobra on the hdhp (with dental and vsp) is.... about $9k. You can call and get the numbers on your health plan from intel health benfits... 1-877-466-9236. And don't hold intel stock... sell it... the market is not looking good right now in general, and only worse for intel. At the very least sell it and put it in something that might do better. But since you don't have a job, bonds is probably the place to put it to ensure you don't lose it when you need it.

If touchable an HSA, serif you can fully fund it this year. You won't be able to with your intel paycheck, but I believe you can use post tax dollars to hit the max allowable and then get the deduction on your taxes. You can then use HSA money to pay for any premiums or expenses that arise.

Ask a still employed friend to look up how to get access to Lynda for free. Intel provides this, but the instructions are on circuit. Dunno what would happen to the access after may 30, but at least you'll get a week free to see if you like it. Lots of good training available.

Learn tap dancing which is a good cardio exercise. Which means you can cancel your gym membership.

This guy is not asking for productive things to do. He's asking what benefits he can claim

My personal list would be:

1) Take some classes/ do certifications on coursera etc to learn new skills - i've been wanting to do that for couple years, but it's hard to accomplish with 80-hour-workweek.

2) Spend time with fam, travel around the world, and volunteer around the world too. I would like to get their (and to some extent mine) head out of the space that tells us that money, possessions, or lifetime jobs at Intel make for worthy life...i think big trip exploring other cultures would help.

3) get involved with organization that works on the cause i like (i already have couple) and volunteer.

4) Work on few projects i wanted to do and didn't have time for (i have couple business ideas and book idea, and would like to test them out fast to see if they were something to pursue).

5) if 4 doesn't work out, get a job with smaller company - one with lot less politics and humble management that lets you focus on value-add work.

Work with a good insurance agent during open enrollment season and many states like AZ provides access-facility for state insurance subsidies. If you have Intel stocks don't touch the dividends and let them accrue/reinvest as shares.

You lazy f---. Can see why you got fired. You just want to continue like you did at Intel but without a paycheck. At least an h1b would have to look for work. You just want to throw yourself on the state. I have sympathy for those who are looking for jobs and can't get/find one.
