Note anymore with new system. But it is always better to contact the hiring manager directly over email.

yeah stupid old system.. always had to give manager heads up whenever i wanted to apply for other reqs and simply meet with other manager and team to find out more about the job..
They did change it to not notify. But when I applied for a job last fall, I got an email a few weeks later saying they accidentally notified managers... They claimed they deleted it from the managers inbox, but can't know if the manager saw it first. When I finally applied and got a new job months later, my manager didn't seem to know. So either he acts really well, or he really didn't know. But I would just email the hiring manger directly, don't take the chance, it isn't worth the stress.
Wherever you go they will find you :)
Before 2015 July it was set in a way that every req u apply manager gets an email. They changed this stupid protocol last year that manager won't be automatically notified until offer is being made. That's as far as I know.
not until offer is made. Does anyone have open reqs? We were told to close all Reqs.
