I agree outside si valley, one can save some serious bank.

That's what we did, but means living within your means.

Also meant we didn't go on holidays, no bmw, small house, enough to raise 2 kids.

But if you look at the stats ( not saying this is Intel employees), a large percentage of people are 1-2 paychecks so away from trouble. Even the higher up salaries.

I don't keep up with the Jones, I don't even know who they are.

So those on the vsp list and the ispers I hope you've saved and can survive a while without a paycheck for while, because I'm not holding much hope out for quick employment in my one horse town.

Intel PEs, who can also be hardware engineers, can hit 400k in the Bay Area, and Intel doesn't pay the most.

"Bay area HW engineers I know get easily north of $400K if you include stock and bonuses."

Glassdoor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and my own corporation headcount would disagree.

I know 8 different people (HW Engineers non-management) that are making $200-$225K a year at hillsboro if you include bonus and stock.

One of them was a GS7. Hard workers everyone of them. I think you'd be stupid to work for less than that. Bay area HW engineers I know get easily north of $400K if you include stock and bonuses.

"Good luck finding a $200k non management engineering job in Portland not at Intel."

Indeed. I mean, seriously, WTF guys (and girls)?

Hillsboro isn't "Silly Valley" with $5000 a month rents, or $1M+ tear-downs in Palo Alto / Menlo Park, or a two hour commute because you could only afford $750K in Gilroy.

Median household (not personal) income in Portland is around $60K a year. Let that sink in for a moment if you will.

Median listed home price in Hillsboro (according to Zillow) is $475K, yet there are properties listed under $200K.

$200K/yr gross income when married, maxing a 401k ($18K a year) and paying $400 a month for healthcare leaves you with a take home of $9,650 every month (or so says my ADP payroll calculator). That is serious bank, and if you made that for a few years, you could have been pretty much bomb-proof.

If you made $200K a year, did you gave all your money to Kuni BMW, Ethan Allen, Expedia and the mortgage broker?

Elaborating on the contractor/recruiter front. I don't want to get a controversial conversation going again about H1B when I say this, so please refrain from commenting on that part of what I say , but, similar to the jobs in America, the Indian's jumped on the contracting scene and started many contracting firms to submit candidates for the jobs posted locally in your area. My recommendation is, work with the local recruiting firms only. You will get the competitive rates that way. So basically ignore those ones that contact you. The way it works, a company will open up a contract opportunity to bid for contacting firms. (In most cases that don't have exclusive recruiting firms), each recruiting firm can submit two candidates. The company will review resumes and choose those they want to interview. Sometimes the recruiting firm will try to get you to stay exclusive to them, and don't buy into that. Stay exclusive to YOU. Whatever recruiter will submit you for a job you are interested in, is the one you want to go with. Also, research what company the job is for. Recruiters try to withhold that info at first. If you can find that out, it's also possible to submit your resume directly to the hiring people yourself. Look for names and email addresses. Dice.com is the best site for tech jobs. You usually have the option to choose W2 or 1099. Depending on your financial or business status, you can make the best choice. w2 allows you to get benefits through some recruiting firms. You get paid faster with w2 and don't have to submit invoices like a 1099, but 1099 is better for write-offs if you have a business. Many contracts will turn into full-time opportunities or regular extensions. Contracting is a great way to get your name out there and build a strong versatile portfolio.

@udv, I know at least 6 people who made $200k+ let go in OR (total comp, not base). Grade 8 can get you to $200k t-comp in OR.

I'm not seeing the pay cut issue... Unless you made tons at intel (no one let go made $200k by the way) you can get the same or better. SW you might actually get a raise. HW there are less jobs so you might have to take a small cut there. Traditionally Intel has always said it's base pay was below average, but it's benefits made up for that. So you should be able to get the same or better money, but the benefits likely won't be as good.

Let's be honest if you work at intel you are paid well, after all the company has 60% GM and prints money making x86 and having a monopoly.

Everyone else is happy making half the margins, get used to making a lot less. But feel good you are the first off the sinking ship, the company will go thru great reductions going forward. X86 is like the minicomputer or workstation company of old ( DEC, SUN ) they got fat on the old margins.

What is Intel's competitive advantage; Process ( nope not anymore ), manufacturing ( nope not anymore ), its the x86 monopoly.

In a free society such extravagant profits are not allowed to stand. Wintel for many unique reasons lasted a long time, but ARM and the smartphone has built the bridge across the moat and are now climbing the walls and the first troops are at the top and flooding the castle.

TSMC and Samsung need to ramp huge volumes on 10nm for the next generation aps processor. The volumes and business require them to come in on schedule, hit performance, and it is a two horse race. Intel doesn't compete with them and thus you see the schedule for CPUs on 10nm slipping, there is no AMD or anyone else competing. What will happen is that 10 and 7nm will come in on Samsung and TSMC because it must for the business to survive. Intel will be happy to sell you a 14nm or even 22nm mostly depreciated factory made chip at 60% margin when your laptop fails. But the reality the volumes of x86 is dropping every year as people just don't need to upgrade. Most of us though still will upgraded our phones every 2-3 years so volumes for ARM are huge and growing!

Be happy you are out, get a good job, won't pay as much but you will have it before Intel needs to layoff huge design teams, manufacturing factory teams as they adapt to 30% GM and volumes well south of 300 million!

In AZ I got a call from a recruiter for a senior software contracting job that pays (at most) half of what I got paid at Intel without any benefits whatsoever. This would translate to 3rd of total compensation I got at Intel.

I left Intel last year and found a job doing exactly what I did at Intel for 22% more in pay and bonuses. I even get stocks. It's in the Healthcare industry, sw development, and I enjoy what I'm doing again. Good paying jobs are out there, you just have to find them.

HW / SW is being outsourced to Asian for 1/3 the price. Get a non-out sourceable job like remodeling, medicine, landscaping. etc.etc. Been going on for decades starting with manufacturing.

Dice.com. Contract jobs. Pay is great if you know how to negotiate good with recruiters. Multi options. W-2. 1099. Contract to hire. Tech contractors are actually looked at much better out in the real world as opposed to how GB are viewed at Intel. Plus. No more performance review bullshit.

Don't be fixated on the salary. Look more at the type of company and its overall work environment. Ask yourself if you can be happy to coexist there?
