Intel is in the throes of declining business, mainly victimized by its own arrogance. There is no working plan how the company will be able to develop a business model in new markets that will make near the profits it once had when it dominated the market. It's time has come. No need to trot out Mark Bohr to talk theory anymore if they can't translate theory into practicality. Mgmt is not on the same page and they are all trying to figure a solution individually to make a statement that they themselves have solved Intel's solution. IOT, DC, FPGA and memory may be successful in the future, but their profit margins will be very low compared to semiconductors during their heyday. His will lead to a permanent reduction in workforce and an Intel struggling to find an maintain its new identity.

We always need cars, underwear, food and such.
We will need laptops, phones and other gizmos, but frankly we don't need x86 to power them. That is only because of the windows and x86 legacy that have garned intel billions of profits to have squandered. The ARM barbarians are at the gate and have crossed the moat and scaling the walls, the end is near. Chips and Moore's law of scaling will go one, but the volumes and profits are going to others and already x86 is late to the next node as ARM has more desperate needs and is going to get there first!
@wpj Some companies like Ford HAVE been around forever. It just depends on the nature of the company. It doesn't matter if the company's going to be around forever or not. Layoffs in downtimes is a fact of life. People at Intel simply have been largely insulated from it since 1976 so they don't realize it.
No BIG corporations lasts forever. Intel isn't any different. They've been around this long and not jumping "fast" enough on the upcoming technologies. No more are the days where our parents worked for a company , was loyal and vice versa, and were able to retire from it. Intel doesn't have the correct leadership to take the company into the next century. They've tried, but like every compan, businesses; ex : Xerox , Hewlet Packard, IBM. Intel will be just another name brand collecting dust. Intel is not your whole life, you feel like a zombie, time to make the donuts... Time to make the donuts... Lots of redundancy. Exit while you can and you will see your tension, migraine headaches go away. Along with your health, it gets better
BKM we have the best technology, smaller, faster, more dense and thus better. We know what is best, don't ask for things, we know what is best, we have the best. If you want something different it takes many many many meetings, you are worn down, schedules compromised, finally you just use what you are told, great products and process come from this.
Pretty soon customers go somewhere else where people listen and bend over backwards to serve the customer.
Intel executives manage by margins. If they don't perceive a high margin in a product, then Intel quickly gets out..with a loss. Intel Senior Management is to blame. That's where the first layoffs should have taken place.
