The fruit company is one iOS compilation away from dumping x86. Doesn't take much to convert to ARM all across the board. I'm sure they got prototypes going, but only a decision as to much easier to extract good deals from Intel and how much more eggs to put into TSMC. Apple is well known for stringing along then chop chop to the best deal for themselves.
Once Apple goes, than the flood gates will open. FB and Amazon and many other cloud based applications power is the biggest thing, ARM is much more power efficient at the expense of performance. But what will happen when current generation is as good as last generation but one costs 50 bucks a chip and the other 1000. You might take the 50 buck chip and cut the cord to the guy screwing you for the last two decades and give them the middle finger too!
Amazon and Google's new IoT appliance all connected and always on, you think they want x86 and Intel to hold sway over that or go open source and ARM where there is fierce competition for the Aps processor and modems and also silicon competition is fierce among the many foundrys. Intel has only x86 and dealing with AMD from long ago and that thinking has polluted everyone at senior levels. The guys from Qualcomm are the only ones with any experience of how the rest of the world works and competes.
Intel is trying and indeed breaking the ARM hegemony in Comm-Datacenters (NFV etc.). ARM has been trying to displace Intel in Cloud-Datacenters and many companies attempting to establish their flag have died ... Seamicro for instance. Jason Waxman gets the credit.
The rust belt was once the apex of technology. It lost its advantage as technology and investment spread around the globe and its workers became noncompetitive. This wasn't necessarily a fault of the worker, but now corporations needed to find workers who worked for less and expected less. This is now happening to STEM workers.
Then, of course, there is the irony of making the chips for the robotics that takes your job as even Chinese workers can be seen as too expensive for the inexhaustible greed/logic of the multinational corporation and their precious Share Holder. Ah, if only citizens and workers still held a share in the government, maybe better national policies could be set.
Google already announced a few months back they are moving away from Intel to ARM based servers in their data centers. The knife has already been applied to the back of Intel.
Remove the Indian, problems solved!
Looks like Intel business is on a downhill slide. This is reminiscent of the age of dinosaurs. Creatures that dominated the earth and went extinct almost overnight since they could not adapt to an ever changing environment.
The problem with Intel 5G is that there is no device maker backing theirs, and the last Intel based device maker Asus just left Intel to go with Qualcomm and Mediatek the other day. This is the same issue Ericsson stated they were facing when they were on a full blown publicity tour to market the Ericsson NX standard in Korea complete with a bus load of Swedish government officials after Ericsson was dropped from the Pyrongchang 5G project, saying that the current lack of handset support was the biggest obstacle to selling the Ericsson NX standard.

Google, Amazon, MS and FB spend billions paying intel and seeing the 60% GM. A Xeon isn't anything ore than an overpriced i3. That business is a s fragile as one code compile to ARM. Power and cooling and efficiency are more imperative in cloud than your pocket. ARM will take the cloud so the golden goose may lay eggs till 1274 slip causes its collapse
