Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Children crying for nothing. Employment is volentary.

I am doing well but constantly keep my resume relavent, linked in updated, and knowledge base growing. I would say 60 to 65% of layoffs are low performers. Hate to break it to the 40% out there you are not a special snowflake. I went on interviews last week even though I am not part of layoffs. I challenge myself..do you?

@2jsd - Anybody that uses the term "special snowflake" like the OP does, deserves all the insults coming his way. I've heard that term used a couple of times now in this forum.....it's getting old, please just stop!

@1whf - You totally miss the point, get a clue. Most of us try to do our best and strive to better ourselves. Yes, expectations are most definitely needed for any job.

The truth hurts, but if you guys want to keep launching personal insults against OP like Trump does, knock yourself out. You're right, it's always someone else's fault you're out of work. Keep complaining away and see if it helps.

OP , You're a special kind of idiot. Hope you're challenging yourself on education of spelling and grammar.

Why do you guys need people to set expectations so you can meet them? That sounds like you just want to do the bare minimum to pass. You should always do the best you can and constantly strive to better yourself. I've been at Intel for a long time and no one I know works 70 hours a week. It's BS if you claim Intel expects you to do that.

Intel HR has grade competency matrices and they don't publish them on Circuit. I've always felt that is a deceptive practice, because at anytime, they can manipulate the competency matrix though they rely on managers to ensure their DRs are performing to the them yet, the ee's themselves don't have access to see them and compare their development plans to them to ensure they are meeting/exceeding. Intel's performance management process is broken. Period. And those who truly believe what OP says about "60-65% being low performers" well, they've drunk the kool-aid and will soon be crying foul the moment Intel tweaks whatever parameter impacts them...this "performance-based" layoff is a sham.

The sad part is that some of the folks leaving deep down wonder if this is true. The notion that if you do not work 70 hours a week that you are a low performer is ridiculous. All of the ISPs in my division were integral parts of the place and much needed. No one is pretending that we fortunately got rid of low performers. The ERP stats are worse with boatloads of the most competent people going out the door.

Intel still makes tens of billions in profit but with this drastic cut those profits will fade. It's only been 3 weeks and already OEMs are screaming because they are not being taken care of.

@1pla - agree with @1bcz, your analogy makes zero sense. If you get married and 5 years into the marriage one of the partners changes their expectations every year and doesn't communicate that to the other partner, and it ends in divorce, who is most culpable? Clearly the person who held unreasonable expectations and worse, didn't clearly communicate them so the other partner had an opportunity to meet or exceed them. Ppl are pissed at the absence of transparency and moving targets wrt performance, which is valid. Further, I've never heard any vows for marriage which include "as long as you keep yourself attractive".... intent of your response is noble, though I'm afraid you missed the mark on the correlation.

@1pla - You sound ridiculous! That analogy does not hold up at all. If you don't play fair in a marriage, you don't stay married. All we are asking is that Intel play fair. Give us the rules ahead of time before laying folks off. Like how about telling us what the average time in grade is for each grade? And don't change the rules every year for each layoff just to suit you. Tell us what the markers are ahead of time. Even the managers at a high level are so discouraged now.

OP is right. Intel owes us nothing and we owe it nothing. If you guys take pride in your spelling skills, then I hope you find a job that rewards you for it. Each one of us is just a pawn to corporations and we must continuously keep ourselves valuable. It's like marriage. You shouldn't stop improving and keep yourself attractive just because you're married. To a certain degree, you can count on loyalty in marriage, but not in work. Intel and us didn't swear any vows to each other when we joined the company.

So that's the funny part I don't work 70 hours a week, I have left low performing fabs cause guess what when F17 was closing they don't give promotions. I give loyalty to family and friends not to companies. Intel has paid me for relo, seed assignments, and bonuses, but I am always looking elsewhere. A company can only betray, use, and abuse you if you let it.

Well if we are true low performers Intel should have done their job properly and ranked us as so so we could improve or get the hell out.

Yes maybe we are low performers, meaning we don't work 70 hours a week with no life or family outside Intel.

I spend enough time in self evaluation in Intel and outside. I know there are areas I could have worked on, my management didn't say what I was working was the wrong direction. I can admit maybe I didn't do this right, but I don't think I did what I did it wrong.

The few things I did wrong was this:

I did what I was told and what was good for the department and company and maybe not the greatest of returns on my career (but we thought satisfactory was well satisfactory).

I didn't act like a Prima Donna.

I did what needed to be done even if that meant lowering my self to work that would be considered a lower grade level because I was the only one who had the skills to get it out the door.

I didn't step on other people and toot my own horn taking credit for their contributions.

Maybe I didn't lead the way I should but the leading was ambiguous and sh-- needed to get done.

Doing what needs to be done is my mistake. If I have to go and dig in the dirt that's what I did.

Maybe I should have been a bastard, spend my time proclaiming to the world I'm the greatest, and good for you Intel that I was there for this and that.

I got a DRA last year on a task I co-led (yes I'm not taking credit and the only person running the tf) that helped get product out the door. It wasn't one of those dras where a known low performance person is added to the end of the names of list. I co ran this tf and we got results. I gave my expertise and told not asked people we needed this and that

If working 50hrs a week, getting awards, dras and saving money for Intel is vsp worthy than so be it.

Maybe the stupidest thing was staying.

Face it, at Intel as a whole we are surrounded by smart people 120+ iq, how to compete smart with smart.

We are just being squeezed.

Oh and on a secondary note if your so damn smart why are you still at Intel instead of a start up where you can be a founder.

And I do find your post insulting but you are entitled to your opinion.

The one. I agree with is improving y.our resume which I haven't done but the vsp offers that service which is good because no way I'm going to write a resume alone. I think it would suck and would end up paying someone to help me anyways

It appears not all the low performers where layoff. Perhaps OP should call one of the 40% and offer his job to them being as he applied for his favorite McDonald's Night Time Fry Cook position.
