This is not really true for all groups, a PE in my group never writes publications and writes a patent once every year or other year, and that's before and after he made PE.

PEs in BA are useless taking 10-15 times more salary than a smart rcg. They are promoted by useless managers to show leadership. intel did not sell anything designed by them till now.
Yes, as promotion to PE is based on publications and not based on what you do as senior lead engineer. So people do some publication or patent for name sake and once they get into PE they don't do any research. It is not university but it can retain its position only if the so called PE s do active research. Most of the PE in Bangalore are useless.
Is there a business need to do research and publish papers? This isn't a university and they aren't professors...
