Thread regarding IBM layoffs

What's going on with the IBM hiring freeze?

I applied for a UK Up2Grad role after spending 2014/15 working for IBM (loved it), and got to the role matching within the business stage in ~October 2015. Not long after that, the whole hiring freeze business starts, and my application has been on hold since then.

I now start seeing open positions being posted to graduate hiring websites, but information provided by the graduate team at IBM regarding my personal application indicates that "all positions have been put on hold". It's been months and they've not even been able to provide us with the vaguest of time scales.

I'd really really love to work for IBM, but if this keeps on for too long I'm going to have to take a job elsewhere, and I imagine thousands of other graduates are going to be in the same boat and IBM are going to miss out on a lot of really good employees.

So, you haven't even been hired yet, but you are already using words/phrases like "get their sh-- together", "ridiculous" and "dense" in reference to IBM? You've also already identified problems with resources and workloads. Do you think any of that is going to change if you get hired?

You want to work at IBM because you want to start your career with a job that pays well. That's nice, but you should know that whatever salary you agree to is essentially going to be your salary indefinitely. Even if you are a top performer, you will be lucky to get a 1-3% raise each year. If you are not a top performer, you won't get a raise at all.

Employee morale is at an all-time low. Everyone lives in fear of the next big RA. My advice to you would be to seek employment elsewhere.

I have been a Co-Op since 2015 and I am about to graduate now. I also have a patent in my name with my coworkers in IBM being sent to the US Patent Office for review. The managers I work with are trying to hire me yet they are still unable to do so due to the hiring freeze.

I honestly really want to work for IBM, but if the upper echelon managers can't get their sh-- together they are really going to miss out on some good hires. This has been very frustrating for me as a soon to be grad because I want to start out my fully independent financial life with a job that pays well. I also find it absolutely ridiculous that IBM would be so dense do a complete freeze without regards to the needs of each department.

Some departments, like the one I am working for, absolutely need more people to manage the work load we have.

Read the threads here. Those postings are only there to convince congress that the US isn't educating students on technology. They are for the most part all just fake, same as the ones on monster.com, etc. IBM posts them so that when congress asks why IBM needs more H-1B visa allowances, to bring in "graduates" with fake degrees from India and elsewhere, Ginni Rometty can say they have all these openings they can't fill with US people. Also to justify the massive firings that have been going on in IBM in the US, Canada, Europe, anywhere that has people working for more than the $17,000 they pay the H-1B workers. What you are doing really is sending a telegram to the HR dept on the Titanic asking if there are any openings. I'd start looking elsewhere.
