What did the OP have against the group? If you are still with the company, why not man up and suggest the projects to be cancelled to the upper management?
Why does Intel, the largest (or in top 3, I forget) contributor to the Linux kernel, need to write SW? Maybe so that operating systems can take advantage of the features in their processors? And then there's the drivers for all their hw devices. Someone has to write them or they can't sell them.
