Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

anybody notice a stealth CAP in their focal?

Howdy.

I got the VSP after spending too long in my grade because of big lateral move. I dunno if I'll take it or not...

I just noticed something funny about my last focal (S3 of course)

It included a listing of "development and improvement opportunities", which are actually pretty easy looking and enjoyable tasks I would like to to do.

The interesting things are the language and how my (then) manager discussed them:

  1. "To... continue to improve your performance, it is import ant to focus on the following key step and opportunities..."

  2. The focal review actually states that there will be quarterly follow-up meetings (!!).

  3. I switched groups and the focal review was my last 1:1 with my old manager. She told me that "it was very important that I meet with my new manager and adjust this list of things with him". No reason or consequences were given.

But... damn.... I swear it's all right there. guess I have a plan if I get through June...

Anybody else notice something like this in their focal?

And is there a process to register changes in a "non CAP CAP" like this with HR so I don't get held to this old one?

I've worked at Intel an extremely long time and finally got ISP. I think Intel just has a new rule- don't expect to work there more than 7 years. After you get your sabbatical, you're lucky if you last that long. Move-up the management chain or you're out. It's vitally important to keep the employee treadmill on fullspeed. Hire NCG's every year and clean-out the top. After about 3 years, everyone's an expert, with this fast moving technology.

More than 7 years, an employee gets too expensive for Intel. The raises add up, and employees are just too expensive to keep around. Ruthless behavior like this is what can earn the CEO his million dollar bonuses.

Successful SL4 should only be valid if: employee is new hire, i.e. worked for < 1/2 the year, or if employee is below expected performance. Anything else and the manager is not applying focal guidelines correctly, and unfortunately a lot of managers did not, causing people to be laid off that shouldn't have been. ISP is eligible for employees hired after Jan 2014 (I think), so they have 2 full focal cycles.

This surpprises me. I thought that new employees (less than two years) are not eligible to ISP.

My manager told me (new employee who was ISP'd) to "keep building your internal Intel network." and being "new to Intel" as justification for "Successful" and SL-4...AKA you're laid off after a little over a year after being recruited away from another (great) job. Good times...

A friend of mine switched groups late last year and was told #3 as well. No big deal, they just want improvement areas that actually make sense in the new position.

For #2, I think that's part of the "new focal" they're trying to work towards. Where 1:1's are more focal-like, at least once per quarter. I recently had a 1:1 that was sort of like that, and far unlike anything I've had before, so I bet that's all it is.

Can't speak for #1, could just be verbiage.

Best thing to do is just ask your manager. For one, it shows the right message to them, and it also puts any doubts to rest during the VSP window. I didn't get one, and now reading the ACT hub's ominous message about "will VSP's turn into ISP's" I'm glad that I didn't. Just food for thought, good luck

It's a pre CAP message. One screw up and you'll be on a CAP/IR with 45-60 days to improve (or an option for ISP.)

what kinda pisses me off is the disconnect between the potentially ominous HR talk and my then-manager's breezy "you gotta do this" approach to the matter... it was the last thing she said as she walked out the door.... then again, maybe it's not a big deal and she was right to treat it this way
