Software is fine. Though, intel was never known for its software competency.

There are tons of open SW jobs in every city. However, their are a few catches. As a SW engineer working at Intel, chances are you are working close to the metal. Firmware, drivers, systems code, graphics, etc. These skills don't directly translate to the higher-level web-dev type jobs which make up the majority of the job market openings. Furthermore, depending on what site you are located at, their may not be many other large tech firms in the area that will pay equally. Obviously this is not a problem for the bay area, seattle, austin, boston, etc. But if you are in New Mexico, some small one off site, or even possibly Oregon, you may find that you need to relocate to find equal employment, unless you are willing to take a pay cut and jump into a web-dev job.
I imagine this is even much more true to HW engineers. However, the day after the layoffs were announced I was contacted by a qualcomm recruiter looking to poach talent, so that's always an option if you are willing to move.
There are lots of extremely competent SW engineers working at Intel for a variety of reasons (lured by Intel throwing around big money to get into SW, solving two body problems, a desire to code close to the metal, etc). Any affected will have a relatively easy time finding a new job.
Intel's problem with SW is Intel's culture.

Very experienced HW people promoted to manage SW teams with 0 SW experience. This is worse than just getting noobs as managers because not only do they not know how to lead the team, they think that they are smarter than the team and smarter than SE's in general (because goddammit, I am a a HW PE from the greatest company on earth!). Guess how well that goes over.

Software projects always have to tie in to clear promotion of the INtel HW line. This leads to a lot of assbackwards "I have a cool technology, how can I showcase it" projects, which have a place in marketing and the labs but not as full-fledged SW lines. You ALWAYS start with the user and their needs, not with whatever tools you got lying around. Especially when the tool is just improves non-bottleneck pieces of the system
Make no mistake. The Intel management has placed the company where it is in the market today... Bad shape. You may want to look and focus your strengths in a successful, growing industry.
Yeah, most of the hardware job have moved to Asia along with "free" trade.
INTEL managers (99% come from HW background) are "dumb and dumber" monkeys/mandrills when it comes to SW. They are complete idiots, since "some super duper GR10/GR11 entities" are teaching them on one-day courses that x86 architecture is complete transparent, and applies straight to all CORE and ATOM CPUs, so INTEL SW engineers can/should switch to ANY CPU+PCH OSes and drivers R&D and support wise, in virtually NO TIME!
Even worse, they have no any clue what are the differences between WIN, Linux, Android, VxWorks, QNX and other OSes... INTEL management cock(sucker)-roaches.
Pathetic losers. Complete idiots. INTEL directors (SLM) are even more retarded, having no any clue EVEN about HW. Psychiatric patients.
This is WHY INTEL will fail (in long run). Aicha, Diane and ignorant idiots like them are 1000% in charge of the company. Brutal INTEL workforce slaughtering (long term), no mercy to 50% of small (GR7/8/9) hard working, knowledgeable and carrying people (other 50% are pathetic FLM and SLM asskissers).
