Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

what criteria will be used to convert VSPs to ISPs?

So, if they have to dip into the VSP bunch to make up their 12K in head count reduction, what criteria are they likely to use when selecting who to cut?

Will your job duties and business group be much protection, or is it likely to be some arcane HR formula?

My time in grade was kind of long because I made a big change in my job. I started out doing a kind of PC driver, and then moved to big data analytics in DCG. My reviews are much improved from my old PC driver days but I haven’t been promoted in the three years since making the switch, and now it feels like the Bad Old Days are coming back to get me…

I just started a new team and project and I’m really excited about it and when discussing the VSP my manager told me steps I could take to get an EE or better in the next focal. (If I get that far!)

Not sure if I should stick it out for a project I like and a manager that seems to respect me or if I should take up with the headhunters and flee a sinking ship…

oregon unemployment is a 6 month pain if you are honest. 2 jobs a week have to be in the Portland area, even if you want to look elsewhere. It was worth 500+ a week though.

The key point is that you are now in DCG, the beloved child.

Can one taking the VSP be rehired at Intel in the future? I was given an ISP last week (U.S.-based) and one of the details in the package states that you can never work at Intel again. So, if that detail is not in the VSP, one may want to take that into account in their decision of whether to take the VSP now or wait until an ISP is handed to them.

The VP of HR had an open forum yesterday and pretty much same message.

@uqi is not telling the truth. The site does not strongly encourage anyone to take VSP. I won't say any more but if you're an Intel employee READ the site and don't get your info from this sketchy website!

Check the ACT site for Intel update on VSPs. Previous poster is correct. Intel now strongly encouraging people who were offered VSP to take them. That should tell you something.

My wife told me that Intel has put put something about VSP's on their website which tells employees with VSP to strongly consider it. I was in the same boat dew years back but then it was not enforced this way. I ended up taking it because I landed up with offers from other companies. So taking the VSP made sense since I got 6 months of free pay as I started of working in my new place right away. So, like you said this is a sinking ship, I wouldn't be surprised people doing what I did. For anyone who stays back guessing they should just wait and see, I think it's a step back in your career. Move ahead and embrace reality things could get worse, but why wait to see if it does when you can make the right decision now ? Remember if you like Intel so much you can always go back , and go back at a higher grade. So here is a thing work in a company that needs you and not in one that wants you out. Good luck and hope you make the right call

Make sure your manager lets you know if you are in the "critical" or "required" or "desirable" for your project or if you decide to stay that you have a project to land on that is in plan. If you are not critical to your project or no place to land, then the second wave of cuts coming up next week in the name of "project cancellation" will take folks by surprise. Good luck

If you have a good manager who has already told you are doing a good job after knowing you got a VSP that's a good sign. But you need to understand something at not completely in their hands and this could be one of them. What I feel if the target of 11% is not met then top management will pressure lower level managers to make harsh calls on who to keep and who to layoff. If you have moves to the team recently , it if your manager knows for sure they wanted to promote you next year they might not give your name up. However if you have been in the same team at the same grade for a long time, and if your manager has no interest about your progress or has not told you in your 1:1,s that she is looking to promote you then you want to take the VSP since you might get hit with something worse . look for jobs right away and if you get one take the VSP and leave with a smile. I believe Intel employees are special and can be an asset to other companies.

I am guessing that the severance package will be 2 years salary (max). Unless your personal finance is in dire straits, taking the VSP should not be based on fatness of severance package.

My advice is this:

Please do not take the VSP. Layoffs are business decisions which can hit you in your new company too.

You are excited about your current project and you seem to have a reasonable manager. This is a big and rare asset. Please do not let it go because of the VSP. Moreover, Intel is a good brand. Intel may be a sinking ship. It may also be a rising rocket. Nobody knows (that includes all the media pundits on this board or elsewhere).

However, do float your resume with head-hunters even if you are going to stay back with Intel. Nobody (including yourself) should blame you for this. You got a career shock and it is your right to keep plan-B ready. If you are the conscientious type, you may also let the headhunters know that you are not actively looking for job but testing water.

The eager ones will still arrange interviews for you. Do attend those interviews and give your best. Even if you are not joining, keep the personal contacts of your interviewers handy. You will build your network and confidence. VSP invariably bruises our ego. A chat with an eager recruiter is fantastic balm.

Disclosure: I got VSP a long time back and did not take it. I have not regretted that decision ever since.

Yeah. People who get VSP should hold out. If take it, you will be labeled with low performance.

@HgmAWLf-cza Exactly my thoughts. There is no significant difference between the two packages, so hold out see what happens and if you end up getting ISP'd then you're not really worse off and you can apply fir unemployment unlike VSP

The ISP packages don't seem to be much different. I would hold out and see how things play out.

I believe many people who got VSPs are similar to you. But now good thing is that you have a good manager as he told you how to improve step by step. Good luck!
