You see, folks, the x86 is a computer chip for PC's and servers. It was created for that purpose, and matured for the purpose. It has never been a possibility to shoehorn it into a phone. Intel did not fail, it was simply outmoded by a new platform type that the x86 silicon was not designed for. Unfortunately for Intel, the x86 silicon is what made it ridiculously rich for all these years. It is also the only thing that COULD keep it going. Best of luck with the Cloud, and the IOTG, perhaps with the Cloud Intel can stay relevant long enough for the IOTG fishing apparatus to net something worthy enough to allow Intel to get rich again. Best of luck Intel 2.0! Intel 1.0.. is almost over.

At least he admitted it being a failure. Lots of leaders deny any failure in their tenure and keep employees thinking things are all rosy. Any number (oh, let's say 99.9%) of all politicians NEVER admit failure. Those in ultimate power are a wicked class that only serve to hoodwink the folks. It's just in this case, failure is admitted, though too late and many billions lost.
And who was running the mobile phone group last 2 years and is responsible for this fiasco? The winner is Aicha Evans and her wonderful Sofia platform. This is one of the biggest failure the mobile industry has ever seen. Aicha has been confirmed by BK last week after her big failure. Is this normal?
We had good people, money, and technology but we missed it because of iCDG and the Sofia nightmare. Moorefield was a wonderful platform. It was not cost competitive but at least it was technically performant. Magic Aicha said she could productize faster, cheaper and competitive. Here is the result. My guess is with the same management team will produce the same failures.

Intel has been trying to show x86 is as power efficient as ARM since 2006. There were many experts showing slides how the x86 will annihilate ARM in performance/power and it was always just 2 years ahead.
This has gone on for 10 years without anyone senior calling the bluff, although it was a laughing stock to most employees. Selling the StrongARM and Cellular capabilities to Marvell in 2006 was our primal sin and we've been paying for it ever since.
But you miss the point. BK admits Intel failed in smartphone market but he did not admin it is his fault. On the contrary he said he could fix it, which was some one else's fault. The question is whether or not you believe he is capable of doing that. To me he hasn't made any meaningful progress so far but presented Cloud+IoT common knowledge as a vision and made a lot of controversial and negative highlights.He got the job mainly because he teamed up with Rene James who has very complementary background and skills. James is gone before BK gained any credibility. If the board had to find a CEO today, I don't believe he would be the one hired. Murthy would have a better shot than BK.
