AFAIK, the original team in Columbia came from NCR acquisition 18 years ago. Those guys were making servers long before Intel has any server market share. Best wishes to them. I wouldn't bet against them.

Do you still have the dude with the 1000hp muscle car with the nitro tanks in the fenders? He should be able to work for Nascar

You also need to understand the world markets are changing. Intel can't continue to be so large and survive.look at previous years size much smaller. Allthe aacquisitions have added numbers but nothing to the bottomline. Pie in the sky diversification efforts. Lack of vision because profit margins have been huge and covered stuff up. Until now - new market reality uncovering reality.

Is there reredundant validation between sites? Columbia/Dupont other? Or did they really do unique work? To corporate they may look redundant so the drop the axe.

If Intel management knew what they were doing we wouldn't be here laying off 12000 people. This is inline what all the other great decisions they have made in the past. Sh&t continues.

Letting go of Columbia site is a huge HUGE mistake. It is the similar to the miscalculation about iPhones not sounding profitable enough for Intel. Without Post Si, we have no products to sell, just majestic promises with mediocre designs that are never going to see the light of the day.

They are given couple of years notice, retention bonus and relocation to other sites. What the hell are you cribbing about?

You need to look at other sites to get a taste of reality.

Most troublesome part of this decision to columbia site is that it shows what management understands to be "DATACENTER". If they could not recognize that this team is critical for it to anything with their datacenter, they utterly clueless on what they are doing and it looks it is pretty much time for everyone to pack their bags and leave.

As a friend of mine says, "You can't have a baby in 1 month with 9 women." Throwing people and money at some problems doesn't achieve much.

While the GDC folk are coming up to speed and are capable, they are still learning. No amount of money or number of people will be able to make up for the loss of these people's experience in the near term in my opinion. Time will tell.

I have worked with this team for many years. I am not part of it. I am 3000 miles away. This is a world-class team and their loss will no doubt be the biggest negative impact loss to Intel in this whole action. It will impact server timelines for years to come. My prediction is that server profits in the 2017-2018 time frame will be half or less than they are now.

This is an example of how mindless the process has been in headcount reduction. This is by far the best post silicon team with the level of experience, knowledge, commitment and time to deliver that is unmatched by any other teams. This does leave a huge knowledge gap and expertise that is definitely going to have impact on the quality and delivery like stated in the original post. Any company would be lucky to have this team.
