These people had been living off the hardworking employees in the groups they "support". In my own interactions with them, I've found them to be cordial and very nice people; however, their knowledge base was severely limited. They often could not answer any of the questions I would ask. When their useless AMs and DMs leave, Intel will probably let them go, too.

NOT true; our admin (who wasn't "useless") was quickly and unceremoniously walked out in front of the ENTIRE group just before lunch (desk was fartheset away from the exit). Additionally, virtually all the admins that could provide coverage were all given ERPs. Our admin's manager has a new "assistant" coming in late next month...

I've had very good ones and some that were complete PITAs.
All in all, though, this is the wrong group of people to be venting on.
I've been in management, and believe me, no one likes HR. Would rather they stay out of our business as they create work that takes away from operations. A good admin is there to reduce work. If done well, they add lots of value by doing this.
Rather then have execs do low-level admin work, or drive strategy?

Seriously?? All the admins I've seen in 20+ years at Intel work their tails off and we're absolutely essential.
A good admin is worth their weight in gold, trust me. And I'm an engineer, not a manager.
IMHO we should be asking this question about HR. But as most know, HR is protected by management, and in return management gets deference from HR.

No our admin was a fat dyke-looking divorced white American admin in her 40s who did nothing for our team and neither helped anyone, often ignoring requests and regularly taking sick days for sick son, sick son 2, sick self, sick dog. Don't expect her to say hello or reply your emails if you are from ethnic group. She survived in that role for 2 years. Director and senior director took no action for her ineffectiveness during that time.
Racist lazy b!tch admin has since last year transferred into IT Tech Support. Still not axed. Saw her active on Lync on Friday. LOL.
In other large companies, only Exec VP has admin.
Ridiculous Intel has an admin for each team. That is a complete waste. Intel must cut this practice. Any director or manager that can't manage something as basic as their emails and schedule - is not fit to be in that role.

HR, legal and Marketing is what i would look into not Admins. Last i checked Intel is an engineering company. For what they are paid Admins do a lot of work.
