I figure I'll make it to 20 years, but then again, I'm at 19 now.

An RCG making a career out of Intel seems unlikely.

If what you define as a career is to make it until 50 or 55 then I would say yes, you can do it. If you actually want to make it to genuine retirement age, then no way.

At 63 I have been jokingly saying that come June 24th I will be the oldest person remaining in my division. It is no longer a joke.

Longtime Execs that have been there when Intel was a rising star are all locked arm in arm and protecting each other. The rest of you are screwed either now or eventually. Miserable climate to work in. Flee

0 - if you want some semblance to a life outside of work

1 - if you want a stroke.

Might even get one if you just try to keep your head above the water.

Depends on what kind of person you are:

Game Player: Yes

Conscientious engineer: No

Excellent statement - I hope all the new hires at Intel really understand this:

"Always remember what's important - being happy, building your nest egg, taking care of your family."

Note how he hemmed and hawed (like he did every hard questions) before he answered? There's your real answer. A few maybe, but,for almost everyone, no.

Sure you can, but only at enormous cost. I think a better question would be why would you want that? It has a terrible risk/reward ratio.

Much better IMO to be a normal, well-adjusted person with normal work life balance who does a good job and earns their pay but does not grow emotionally attached to a corporation. Sell your stock as soon as you get it (diversify!). Over time, it's just like any market - sometimes the company will overvalue you and sometimes undervalue. In those inevitable times when the company underestimates your value, you might be let go. Fine. Move on to the next corporate twilight zone and continue to live your happy, normal life.

Always remember what's important - being happy, building your nest egg, taking care of your family. The company you work for is just a job. A means to an end. If you long for a "career" you are just setting yourself up for disappointment and frustration. Companies today cannot be trusted to fulfill their side of the bargain.

Yes you can.

Like many other big companies it is based on:

1) Making yourself seen by others.

2) Making yourself heard by upper level managers.

3) Being perceived as succesful. This may mean you have to take credit from others.

The guys and gals who are both professionaly competent and use the above tactics will rise very fast in Intel.

Good work is less important than brown nose, so sad for this once great company

To have a career and rise up the ranks in Intel, you have to be in the inner circle of your manager and the higher ups of your department. I know of several colleagues who are just Powerpoint pushers but spends many weekends cycling with the big bosses and happy hour drinking and entertaining the big bosses, these few colleagues have all went up the ranks pretty fast. And when CoC charges filed against the Dept Head that he only promotes those that are in his inner circle who cycles and drinks with him, HR quickly overwrites the case and CoC case closed!

So for those who play the game and in the inner circle of the bosses, yes they have a career. For all others, no you don't.

If you toe the line with your manager and ride his coat tail you can rise.

But intel is such an insular cultural it stifles real thought/development.

Nope. No. Nyet. An-ni-yo, Nein! Non! Nahin.

The only way to have a career at Intel is to come in as a fat-boy "I ate all the pies" Exec at $25M a year and milk it 'til you finally figure you have enough, or your cholesterol finally makes your heart give up.

The rest of you can have "a job" at intel for a short time. And be grateful. And subservient. Peasants.
