It's been a great 30+ years. I'm happy the way things lined up for me, but hope those that remain will be able to hit the same milestone.

Agree with this statement. Along with this, there is no Serma or minimum pension for new employees anymore. Going forward, Intel clearly is not interested in keeping any employee very long. Why would any RCG want to work for a company like this? There are many, many better companies to work for that truly care about their employees.
Peyton Manning and Charlie Woodson come to mind, anyone want to list some other great oldies.
Young ones are hard to predict in sports, business and academics, but the desire for a home run over a steady eddy is so deep in human nature. What great business leaders, coaches need is the ability to see thru that shallow approach. Any monkey consultant and draft monkey can whisper that into any desperate but short of brains leader.
Unlike young guns in athletics in technology the best and brightest aren't going to come to Intel, most don't get PhDs, the ones that do the last place they go is a place like Intel. That is really the reality, yet our executives simply don't understand, so sad as where that has taken this once great company.
Your analogy is a good representation of what's happening today. In the NBA nowadays, you do see a lot of teams gambling on young players with "high ceiling" over older players that have already reached their ceiling. We're seeing similar effect at Intel. A lot of the young people may never end up being better than the vetrans we're losing. However, Intel is betting that we get a few stars who will help take Intel to new heights.
I was thinking about this a different way.
Take your child he get's up early every day for 10 years to work out in the mornign and night. His freshman year he makes varsity as the last person. He makes it to next to last soph, third from last his junior and the same for senior. Some hot shot freshman comes the his senior year, dang good with potential but out of the team. BK the coach makes room for him and kicks your kid off the team because he is maxed out, and slow to progress anymore. Forget the fact he continues to be a vital part of the team.
What do you think of that coach? Even in athletics I think you keep the veteran. Think Charlie Woodson comes to mind, LOL.

The difference between the grim days of 1984 and today is that back then you had leaders who ran the company with vision getting out of memory business and into X86. Today, we have clueless, arrogant, ignorant clowns running the show only thinking about their own pay not what's best for Intel.
He joined at the beginning of the most epic growth story in computer history - second only to smartphones.
It's crazy lucky.
Engineers today in mid-career or early careers are screwed. Moore's law is ending and that have grave consequences not just for Intel but the entire Silicon Valley complex that has relied on it.
Look for much slower growth as electrical and computer engineers start to look more like their brothers in civil or mechanical engineering.
We had a good run.
OP here - well to share I started during real grim times. Year after I started Intel laid off 25% during the dark dram 1984 days. Got sucked into back end test from wafer sort to platform test. I did stints in product engineering, module delevopment, supplier management, Software development, program management, and ATM bring up + support.. Always persevered during the 125% solution, 90% pay, no raise, 1/2 raise you name it. I always looked for opportunities in areas I loved and moved based on opportunities and had a passion for. If you are smart, quick learner, and able to see opportunities in your area of expertise you could hang on. My opinion is being a Marine veteran helped me tolerate pressure and work tension. I know some folks here have no respect for vets, but I believe it helped me survive the tough times..
Good luck, OP. 30 years is quite an achievement. I hope I can come close to that (23 years currently). Intel is changing and now employees will be renters and not owners.

The days of 30, 20, and 10 year employee @ Intel are over with. Times and business climate are much different than even seven years ago. Good luck to you OP.
