Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Poll: How effective has ACT been? Did you lose only the bottom people?

On your team, how many were let go, how many deserved it, and how many didn't? Include everything related to ACT (ISP, VSP, ERP).

At my 2nd level manager's level we lost 13. Two of those had it coming. But five were very valuable contributors, one of those important enough that projects are being delayed over it. Ironically, that one was an ISP that literally nobody saw coming.

Meanwhile, I can easily find 11 other people that folks can't believe made it through ACT, they're so bad.

ACT so far is a spectacular failure. While BK may have have hit the numbers the impact in some groups is so big, it is amazing the GMs/VPS haven't had the power to influence, it just shows how how screwed up this company is that when the CEO does something stupid nobody can stop it what a screwed up cultural.

Maybe if the guys at the top were smart then no problem but they aren't... so bad news.

I agree with the OP. Our group lost some good humble managers that were there to help their teams grow rather than just looking good in meetings.

Known 4 people who took either ERP or VSP. All are irreplaceable stalwarts and ace contributors in their fields. Very uniquely gifted individuals. They are not filling a job; they ARE the job. What a shame.

"Why were these amazing employees not shown their worth in focals? did they have bad managers, were they too busy doing actual work, were they not the popular kids...?"

The irony is that I'd bet many of the people ISP'd had excellent descriptions of their accomplishments in their FOCALs. Unfortunately, the FOCAL write-up's weren't part of the criteria. Only the grades were.

There are many reasons that someone could be given Successful/SL4.

In my case, my manager gave me this because she said that I'm new and SL4 is the appropriate stock level for new people. I tried to get it changed, but she wouldn't budge. She gave me this despite some amazing accomplishments (incl. external awards and accolades in my Focal write-up).

At least in my group, the people who have been designated the "chosen ones" will get the higher grades as long as they stay part of the "in crowd" with the manager and her boss. Everyone else is relegated to scraps, no matter what they do or document in their Focals.

Most of those given ISP-ERP are 3 times more productive than their would be replacements on the same job (one used to be replaced by 3 people, to do his same job whenever he was on long vacation). Their quality of work was superb. They were not usually big talkers but doers, and usually twice as productive as their comparable counter parts ( the talkers). Do the math, is Intel better off?

@fvr there were newer folks affected. Perhaps they weren't automatically selected... but there were discretionary means available to the groups.

People targeted with ISP were those 4 to 10 years on the job. The managers are protecting their older crowd as they can't find a job elsewhere. Criteria didn'apply to RCGs.

None of the ISPs I know of in AZFSM were bad engineers; I would have kept them all. Other engineers with decades of fab experience took ERP.

The lithography group in Fab32 was hit hard. Blamed for not matching D1D for 14 nm. As you are aware, failure to match can never be TD's fault; it's always a failure of will within the receiving fab.

ISP in our group only fell on two people: one who was legitimately a low performer and the other was a recently-hired future Intel leader who had a threatened, vindictive manager.

If layoffs impact good and bad at the rate of 1 or more good, productive employee for every legit underperformer, then we're throwing out the proverbial baby with the bathwater. What's worse is that because the way that the ISP and VSP were assigned, the truly toxic, bad ICs and managers in our group, who are the root of the problem, were entirely untouched.

The Senior Principal Engineer in charge of our group's most important project took ERP. He saw the writing on the wall and that because several really solid worker-bee types took VSP that his job of delivering the high profile project was going to be next to impossible. That leaves us with a bunch of Powerpoint Rangers and politicians. He basically said, "I don't need this sh*t" and turned in his paperwork.

Our group lost over a hundred years of combined experience. You cannot just get that back with RCGs.

ERP has been particularly deviating for my group. There is simply no way to backfill or do knowledge transfer in the time we have and thus decades of knowledge are walking out the door.

My manager oversees a large organization. She did lose some low performers, but she also lost, in her words, the most important person in her org, by far. You know the pareto principle - the 20% of the people who provide 80% of the value - one of those people. It was a devastating blow and she is really scared about the future.

I lost my manager today to erp. I am still in shock that he is leaving. He is probably the best manager is whole group up until 3rd level above me. Three things I felt after he revealed his decision.

1) It is really hard for people to digest that ACT is targeting good people just because they are very experienced and like to do what they are doing

2) It is impossible to replace the talent, experience and leadership that is being labelled as 'stagnant growth is same job position'

3) people don't leave companies, they leave managers. Similarly if a good manager leaves, so will be anyone who is even a little talented under him

Btw..I joined at Intel as rcg, then 2 years here. I already have an offer from another company but still waiting for other offers to choose the best option. I don't have a house or car or family, instead I cleared off my student loan last month

I know one who got ISP-ERP.

Before that; 3 people used be brought in to do his norma work, whenever he was on a long vacation or on temporary assignment elsewhere. Now he is gone, they will need 3/4 people do his same job. That is more than 3 times they paid him.

Many of ISP-ERP are similar caliber of employees. Do the math, going forward; for Intel to be at the same level productivity, it will need to replace ISP-ERP by ~3 employees (quality is out of the window). Thus more than 3 times Intel used to spend. So, If IoT, etc was starting to make money to replace the losses in PC market, one would justify Intel's move. Else tough!!

What a brilliant move and the worst is yet to hit the company.

BK said he wanted to make changes from a position of strength and the first move just weakened the company beyond belief and destroyed the moral of those that stayed.

San Jose State Brilliance, the same the thinks a Trump fund raiser is a smart thing, LOL

Being new I survived, but most of the introverted worker types are gone in my group and most of the loud ashats are still there. Future does not look good for me in any way.

We also seem to have lost more good people than bad. That's not surprising though. Bad managers result in bad focal results which result in bad layoff decisions.

We were decimated because so many of us were senior and mature

and thus triggered the ERP and VSP. The one poor performer was the only one left standing as a fluke because she moved to a different manager/role because nobody knew how to manage her.

We lost more good people than bad. ERP and VSP did horrible damage, ISP not so much, though one really good got hosed via that one.

More good than bad has been lost in this abortion. Some modules are devastated, nearly all of their senior techs are gone via one of the 3 methods. Some shifts managers are down to 1 or 2 from 5. Ugly all the way around.
