Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

45 minutes left to decide, wtf do I do?

I'm offered ERP, but also VSP. My 1st, 2nd, 3rd level managers want me to stay and say if its up to them, I'm staying. I want to stay. If I decline ERP and Intel HR "lets get rid of the old people" algorithm is reapplied, I'm gone. I would feel like such an idiot for trying to stay only to get forced out.

But quitting with no other job lined up seems pretty friggin' stupid. I'm a technician near the top of the pay range and made about 75k last year. I'm certainly worth it, I work hard and keep my engineers out of trouble. But gawd, its so hard now to want to be at a place that pulls stunts like they did last year and this year.

I used to be so proud to work for Intel, Andy Grove is probably rolling in his grave at the crap BK is pulling.

I'm contacting the EEOC irregardless. Targeting people for termination solely because they maxed out on the promotions is a dagger aimed at old employees.

This poor person's situation is so screwed up! How did BK approve such a stupid algorithm for ISP and VSP and ERP?

Lose good people, lose valuable people, kill morale what a recipe to start with to try and fix the company, LOL

If it helps. I didn't take it either and don't regret it. I'll face whatever that comes ahead. Have nothing to lose really.

Agree, don't torture yourself. I wouldn't give the decision a second thought now, it's been made, now make the best of your career going forward. Rest easy knowing that you put a lot of thought into the decision and made the best one you could with the information you have at hand.

I learned not to second guess myself and it really helps in life. Trust that you did your best and look forward. Good luck!

"Every day I'm at work for the next year, I know I'm going to be thinking "I'm working for free."

Every day when the sh*t hits the fan, and it does every day, I'm going to be thinking "I could be doing something else."

OP, I was in a very similar situation, same grade and definitely mirrored your thoughts which is exactly why I ended up taking it. My thinking was as you stated, I'd be working this whole next year for free and probably go through the same thing next year. I just didn't want the stress of worrying about it, (meaning next years review), day after day. Also, talking to some managers and others I really don't see the ERP package ever getting as good as this time around.

However, I'm not writing this post to make ya feel bad, honestly I'm not. Now that you've made your decision, which you obviously did for your own reasons, you have to stick with it and just put this horrible series of events behind you. Definitely don't torture yourself about it, just move on and be confident in the decision you made.

Best wishes

@1eiz Lol if you think G5s work that hard you're mistaken. And G5 is just a 4 year Bsc degree + 1-2 year experience, not PhD. Myself am working 45 hr/week, not on call, don't even have a work phone, have great work life balance, and pushing 200k/yr. Like I said, pays to go to school.

"At 4:50 today I went in and accepted ERP. Almost 29 years at Intel. I was sick to my stomach and had a headache all day. Once I hit that accept button, I immediately felt better."

OP here. I'm over 20 years, didn't sleep last night and been feeling sick and tense for weeks. I didn't hit the accept button. I don't feel better. One of my coworkers just called, he accepted it. For the foreseeable future I'm going to second guess my decision.

Every day I'm at work for the next year, I know I'm going to be thinking "I'm working for free."

Every day when the sh*t hits the fan, and it does every day, I'm going to be thinking "I could be doing something else."

But if I had taken it, I would be having a whole different set of worries but with a one year cushion.

Damn it. I screwed up.

"Huh, G56 is like G5 pay, which a 24 year old would start their career at. Guess it does pay off to go to school."

Not all of us are cut out to be an engineer with a PhD. If everyone had the intellect and social awkwardness needed for an advanced engineering degree, then advanced engineers would be paid about as much as school teachers.

I'm quite happy with the intersection of responsibility vs. reward. I don't have to be on call, carry my work phone during off shift hours, don't have to come in at nights or on weekends when things are going bad. My work life balance is outstanding compared to the typical engineer I see.

I have great respect for my engineers, but I also pity them. No amount of money is worth having to work that many hours during what should be the best years of your life.

Intel under BK is a new Reich, its going to get worse before it gets better.

Your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level managers could care less about you. They only want you to stay so they don't have to train a green badger to replace you. Hope it works out for you.

Just think how much credibility intel will lose if vsp do not convert to isp. Intel is serious this time. Sorry but they are following through.

If you want to stay, you should stay. Especially since you don't already have another opportunity lined up. You could ask your manager to give you retroactive or out-of-cycle level 2 stock which would guarantee that you don't get caught up in any HR criteria.

Whatever decision anyone decides to make. Use up all holidays now because they do not get paid out with any package. I know because I lost 6 holidays of pay.

OP here. I'm not taking it. I have been inside Intel a long time and don't want to take a huge pay cut to leave, not to mention loss of how much vacation I get, sabbaticals, etc. If they ISP me, it won't be that many weeks off what ERP would have been. With unemployment, if it took me a couple months to find something else it would end up being a wash.

If you are a younger employee, one day this will be you. I'm a G56, only way to become a G57 in D1D and D1X ramp is to assassinate a 57 and take their place! I don't know if we even have G57's in ramp, I know TD does.

As I type this sentence, the ERP and VSP window is closed. God help us all.

75k is the top of your scale? You could do way better as a contractor, billing 150k annual. I would take the ERP and flip your job to contracting.

I wish I could trade places with you. I'm 2 years short of retirement and would have taken the ERP in a heartbeat if it had been offered. I don't relish living in this toxic environment but staying for 2 more years is the financially responsible thing for me to do. The ERP would have been better though.

Everybody's situation is different. ERP will not convert to ISP. But if you remain 'stagnant' without an EE/O then you may end up on another list. Fab MTs that do a good job on a busy campus are not likely to be simply chopped. If you're in F11x, maybe you should consider it.

I believe for the reasons you have stated, that Intel will NOT use VSP criteria for ISP

That said the ERP is sweet and were I offered it I would be tempted, but if you like working and your manager likes you, then stay put

If I was in your shoes, I would leave Intel. You already have a target on your back (VSP), & if you don't get booted this round, it's likely to happen next round. Intel is changing... time to move on.
