For every complex problem there is NO simple solution (says Murphy's Law).

In INTEL case that is the partial truth. There is (very simple) solution to at least half (%50) of the problems described in the initial post. you will ask: which?

So simple, 2+2=4, but for BK, and MR, and DB, and DD, and INTEL BOD... and... and... This is tensor matrix equation for The Universe Creation solution! :-)))

Intel(tmg) always calls bs on other companies process. Data, delivery/yield and market share call bs on intel/tmg!

14 nam yields aren't terrible, but not as good as 22 nam was at the same point.

WOW four generations are coming on 14nm that is very very bad news rumor. I heard 14nm yields are still way short, but I guess that is better than ZERO!!!

If 10nm slips than power, die size, performance for the Kaby follow-on will be terribly, bigger, lower yield, not enough capacity... But they do have the fact demand is falling 10% / year so I guess the die can grow about 10% for the Skylake and Kaby follow-on, LOL

Now for Intel to be bought, that is something very likely if 10nm execution has problems, LOL

@HH3QE2I-qps, according to what @HFC6oYW-1irm writes: Canon Lake (CNL) is delayed due to process issues and design bugs that crept to Si. Looking more and more like a 2018 affair. There is indeed another SKL derivative in place for 2017 after KBL this year. Once this news reaches technical and business analysts Intel stock will take a beating, trust me on this one. ... INTEL is failing. EUV process is way to complicated for 10nm and below.

Who will buy INTEL? Do not see any potential buyer in this possible scenario. Buyer needs to buy lots of dead wood (70% of the company). Not at all rational decision, if you ask me.

Companies merge when 1+1 = > 2 In the case posed there are several problems

1) Intel can't afford to buy TSMC as the Altera deal busted their balance sheets

2) There is some rational in Intel desiring TSMC as they currently have a very attractive foundry technology and Intel has a very specialized / optimzied x86 tuned process and 1+1 would be > 2

But TSMC and Taiwan and China wouldn't allow it to happen even if Intel had the the money.

Now for Intel to be bought, that is something very likely if 10nm execution has problems, LOL

Intel has not once bought a leading company in their industry. We buy the dogs thinking we can make them better... the problem is that we ourselves are a dog living off the last morsels of steak from our old monopoly and foolishly expecting more.

Intel is actually making calling BS on TSMC 10nm and 7nm chips. If that's true, Intel will be fine. It's ARM, a design once owned by Intel, that will take the house of cards down on Intel.

Intel can't buy TSMC. They can't afford it. The balance sheet is already leveraged to the hilt.

Acquisitions also have the problem of not being effective under the new regime due to culture clash.

Finally, Taiwan would block the sale even if Intel could find the money somehow.
