The oldest one I know is 55. Contrast that with my kid's pediatrician who is 75 and still planning to work.

Younger == cheaper. However you can do some jobs with two grade 8's that would require a whole team of grade 3's. Our management is pathetic.
many Engineers work upto 75 to 85 years in Industry/Co./with Firm/Dealer/Distributor/Retailer as Engineer or in University or College as Professor ( Engineeringnothing great now a days.
Old engineers have decades of raises and healthcare costs and much more baggage.
Much cheaper to hire H1b PhD and pay them 115K. For the most part they maybe stupid with no experience but they listen, work hard as hey have energy and the sky is the limit in potential. You know for sure the old engineer based on his track record is an old dog on his last hurrah, just make up some criteria and kick them out the door!
I was 42 when I went to work for a GM subsidiary. During my interview they said I was hired but they wanted me to get my BSEE from UCSB and they would pay for it. I worked flex hours so that I could fit in my classes and graduated Three years later. I worked there until I retired at 58, returned to school for two years and then went to work for another prestigious international company and retired at 75. I then realized the engineering bandwidth and decided to go to Law school. I must cut this short as I have to study for finals.
Intel pushes out the older engineers.
There is a myth about there being a shortage of engineers which is not true, there is an oversupply here in the USA.
Where did all the old engineers go ? Just because a few are still there, doesn't mean it is a trend.
They push out the older engineers because:

They cost more than an H1B

They demand a logical reason on why something needs to be done versus just blindly accepting AR's

They need to make room for newer people with newer ideas.
HR, Management pushed the idea that intel needed to change and drove a new model that was not proven.
I advice all my friends a few things:

Do not expect to work as an engineer at intel after age 45.

Prepare to be forced out by unreasonable work demands or termination after you turn 45.
There are a few who make it to retirement age 67, but it is a rare exception.

63 and I joke that after the actions I will be the oldest person in my division. Of course with more rounds to go who knows if I will last.

Thanks guys. I am actually not with Intel. Bit have seen many people take about age discrimination. I am early 40ish. And generally have avoided people management. I am more of a technical and hands on sw architect out of choice , so I was just curious what was a realistic age when I would have to think about doing something else. I am glad to hear there are people on their 50ies still working
intel engineer after 40 has to work with powerpoint or excel spread sheet, otherwise they are not successful. something terribly WRONG !!!
If you are an over 40 engineer that has not yet gone into management, there is a certain stigma. People, rightly or wrongly, assume that you have no growth. There is lots of ageism in our field.

52 here. Changing employers now. Get your data outside Intel.
only like that @Intel. I was ISP'd last yr and started working for much smaller company. I am 55 and among the youngest in the new company. Looks like I be working here for a while. Leave Intel.
It seems like an engineers career is a steep linear grade up to about 45 and then goes into exponential decline thereafter
