Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

I like Intel because it is so slow. I can do a lot of things outside my work life. I have been here 20 years and never get a VSP.

I went on long vacation. I came home. Things were still the same. The issues I have seen before I left were often in the same state, as if time has not passed. Customer get tossed around for months with little to no answers. Most people in Intel don't understand how the microprocessors work. Most don't read the specification while most answers are really in the internal specs where customers cannont see. I used to think I don't belong here because I like to work fast and efficient. But after I am married with kids, I spend my time on them after a less than 40 hrs work week.

I found this saying from Steve jobs very true about Intel.

"There were two reasons we didn't go with them. One was that they [intel] are just really slow. They're like a steamship, not very flexible. We're used to going pretty fast. Second is that we just didn't want to teach them everything, which they could go and sell to our competitors," Jobs is quoted as saying.

The ugly truth is, the future of computing is not what Intel is providing. Customized chip it is.

But now, after five decades, the end of Moore’s law is in sight (see Technology Quarterly). Making transistors smaller no longer guarantees that they will be cheaper or faster. This does not mean progress in computing will suddenly stall, but the nature of that progress is changing. Chips will still get better, but at a slower pace (number-crunching power is now doubling only every 2.5 years, says Intel). And the future of computing will be defined by improvements in three other areas, beyond raw hardware performance.

Turtle is going to get run over by a tank driven by the foundries and Apple.

If Intel is a turtle it's partially because we cater ridiculously to our OEMs. In Intel's heyday we made a processor and the OEMs clamored to get it. Now the OEMs still get it but in their desire to differentiate themselves from their competitors they force Intel to make changes: customize the firmware, tweak the software, change the card's form factor, hell paint it purple :)

The consequence is that we spent thousands of man hours extra and no doubt many millions of dollars creating the same products with minor tweaks that they end user doesn't care about. All to appease our OEMs. We get nothing for it but the reputation that we are slow.

Most of the people I work for would love to go back to the old Intel: here's the processor/card/chip, etc. Take it and shut up!

Since that will never happen our reputation as a slow mover will continue.

BTW, I work with OEMs daily and know that this is one of the major reasons we no longer innovate; we all spend our time catering to the whims of the OEM.

Intel is A turtle but it will always win the races against rabbits and for ever....Others will lose on the long run.

All what Intel needs is real HRM, less work politics, less Fluffy technical titles.

Folks are fired all over the planet and all over the companies, so what? that's the ROG. Isn't it?

You just need to understand the globalisation meaning. If you want to keep your job, or if you want to negotiate your package, stay human, be innovative, then get in touch with your Union. If you don't have one, then you deserve what's happening to you..... ☺

That's why I have left Intel.

Couldn't stand the fact I'm in the same team with c-level engineers.

Intel was once a good company to work for. I believe at that time, most players are A players. Eventually, some bozos started to come in and hire all the bozos, that is how we end up here today. Unfortunately these bozos also move up. Bozos are B and C players, they will not recognize A player. That is why it is so hard for A player to survive here. A player cannot tolerate B player. With this 12k, it is not going to save Intel because the managers were hardly touched. They are going to hire bozos again.

“A small team of A+ players can run circles around a giant team of B and C players.” – Steve Jobs

And why ARM and the foundry fab will eat intel going forward, LOL

I am the OP. I survive in Intel by not going too fast and not being open. Intel, when I started was still good. After 10 years, things started to deteriorated. The stock price reflected it. You stay ranged bound until today. They are many who think they live and breath Intel. They are also among the inefficient ones. 3/4 of my days are filled with meetings, I only go to 1/4 of them. Most are set for weekly repeat that talks about the same stuffs with no real action or frivolous actions. People don't question why they are in the meeting. Of course, half the people who attend the meeting don't really touch the microprocessors. They are there to guess and make someone to do it. Usually the someone, who can be me, avoids those meeting. You end up getting the AR to feed the meeting organizer or the frequent. This is one way I survive happily in Intel. Do what you need to do and that's it. There are many others who want you to do their jobs because they are incapable. Avoid them.

Anybody remember back in 2005ish when we got requests from Apple to evaluate if we could make chip per their specifications? lol. Simple requests from Apple engineers took 2 intel VPs, several Directors, dozens of managers, multitude of engineers, Days of meetings to respond. You have to be there to believe it, in retrospec it was hilarious.

In steve job's book, he mentioned that his engineers refused to use Intel's chip, can we blame them?

You're right, Intel is retaining all those dumb asses who know how to kiSs Aass Most of Intel VPs fall in that category. So Intel reaping what is sows.

Been in Intel for many years, now at Apple.

Apple is at least x2 faster in everything we do compared to Intel. I was amazed of what can be done once the dev process is efficient and the amount of politics is negligible compared to Intel.

Exactly.

We are slow for many reasons. first we work in silo. we have redundant verifications at each steps of the development process. We do not know if the verifications we do bring real value to the paying customers because we do not have any linkage to them. The main purpose of our verification is to satisfy the next in line team that will be receiving the products, if they are happy, our boss is happy, we get good stocks at focal, then we are happy. we dont give a dammn if the paying customers are satisfied or otherwise. After all, Intel wins by defining and changing the rule, not by having good competitive product.

There are many other reasons, but it boils down to the culture of convoluted rewarding system, the culture of arrogance and not listening to customer for decades.

the real question is who is causing this slowness, engineer or FLM/SLM?

I would guess OP was forced to be slow in order to survive.
