1oee That's what 'uneconomic' means.
They have no money to sustain the appropriate investment.
1qsd of course all the smart ones are trying to get 10 working that is the whole problem! This is a repeat of 22 and 14 mm and each time the future node slips more and more. This is Intel's sad other virtuous cycle the that is killing them. Not enough resources and have to steal from other programs and robbing their schedule. Clearly layoff will help this problem as well!
Just last week I met someone working on 7nm. It's actually the first person at Intel that I've ever met working on it. I wish I could say I thought they were particularly smart but I can't. I have a feeling we don't have our best and brightest on the 7nm projects.

Intel is struggling at 14 nm, is delaying 10nm, and hasn't thought about 7nm. Intel is so far behind it's amazing Andy Brant, BK, and Stacy Smith still have jobs. They should have been perp walked last year.
Do intel chips still cost $600 a pop?
